Abstract: You wake up from a coma in a hospital after a car accident, you can't remember anything from your past not even your name.

Leaving the hospital you find yourself in a deserted town, calling for help is useless, no one responds. You now venture outside trying to find any clues of who you really are and what happened while you where in a coma.

You are Alive.

Genre: Survival Horror
Engine:

Download:
Currently Chapter 1 is done.

No RTP version:
Link (21 MB)

With RTP version:
Link (43 MB)

The demo's length is approximately 30 min to 1 hour depending if you try and search every side of the hospital to find some stuff or just rush to the end. (At the moment there are some hidden stuff but not much. It's inside the hospital only anyway, later on there will be more hidden stuff to find and some unlock those (?) in the load screen and more thumbsup.gif )

There's an error when you try to save because rmxp compression compressed also the save file... Anyway to solve it make a folder named
"Save File" without the "" and it will work.
(Until I reupload a new demo)

(For new people, RTP is needed to play rpg maker xp games.)

Story
Long Story
While going for a road trip with your family you get involved in a car accident which killed your children on impact, you and your wife survive the accident and get sent into hospital. Your wife injuries were more serious than yours, her symptoms where broken ribs and pneumothorax but she didn't survive the operation. Your symptoms where broken ribs, severe skull fractures and a concussion that made you lose your senses.

During the operation some complication arised and you fell in coma with some brain damage. Doctors conducted the skull fractures with the concussion could have possibly made you lose some of your memory but they couldn't be certain until you regained senses.

Meanwhile you were in a coma in a foreign island some scientists where experimenting on ways to modify our dna to cure the ageing "malfunction" of our species in hopes of achieving eternal life. Complications rose and instead of finding a remedy to ageing they created a virus that made people lose control. The virus was considered potentially dangerous and so it was kept hidden from the public as ordered by the government.

Weeks passed but the scientists where not getting any conclusive progress from the experiment so the government cut their supply of money. The head scientist, Dr. Chris Gerber creator of the virus was displeased with the news but there was nothing he could do.

Dr. Gerber couldn't neglect all the research he did and all progress done. It was driving him crazy being left alone without the possibility on doing anything, but the project was not left dying, a foreign company contacted Dr. Gerber on the continuation of the research.

Dr. Gerber accepted without any hesitation, little did he know that the company he joined where more interested in turning the research into a weapon than a remedy to cure people.

After a month Dr. Gerber managed to reconstruct the molecule of the virus, now he could continue from where he left. The research started to get some progress done tough it was far from ready.

Tests were being conducted on small animals which concluded the subjects inhaling the virus suffering an exponential increase in aggressivity resulting in a highly contagious rage that kills it's victims after a couple of hours.

The company in charge of Dr. Gerber's research was notified of the progress and dispatched a sample to be tested on some prisoners. The results were terrifying, the virus did raise people from the dead but they were no longer human, they became predators....

The company ordered Dr. Gerber to progress the research so that the virus could be controlled but Dr. Gerber opposed their orders stating his intentions where to find a remedy for ageing not to create a biological weapon. Dr. Gerber didn't want to take part of the modification of the research and requested to be resigned of the project. The company couldn't let him go so easily, he had valuable information and forced him to continue the research against his will.

Without any choice Dr. Gerber had to continue the research.

A week passed and more tests were conducted on these monsters, surprisingly victims raised from the dead didn't seem to suffer any pain when hit or shot unless they were shot in the face or decapitated else they remained dead instead of rising again.

Dr. Gerber couldn't bear with his research becoming a biological weapon of mass destruction so he modified the formula without the companies consent and managed to reduce its effects exponentially. The modification managed to change the virus from effecting people that where alive; victims had to die for the infection to trigger.

Victims that raised from the dead had infected blood in their systems so if you where bit, scratched or infected blood touching/entering in a victim system it would have caused a bacterial infection killing the victim after a couple of hours and thus triggering the virus.

Later that day Dr. Gerber committed suicide leaving a note stating the project was complete but he didn't want to have any part of it.

Having lost the scientist who created the virus the company thought on having a final test before selling it on the black market. Prisoners were taken into a special room while the company and interested buyers looked from behind a protective barrier for the results. The experiment started without any complications but after a couple of minutes the prisoners started hitting the barrier to get out and one of them got shot. The "dead" prisoner raised from the dead and started attacking the other prisoners and they where turning one by one into these monsters.

The buyers where very impressed with what this virus could do but while they were going to start contracting the infected started hitting the machine and it started overheating, the machine was damaged and it was about to explode exposing the virus into the atmosphere infecting everyone on the planet.

The scientists tried everything they could but there wasn't enough time. The people reviewing the experiment managed to get out before the explosion and after a couple of minutes the whole building collapsed from the explosion leaving several victims dead.

The victims started rising from the dead after a couple of hours, people outside didn't know what was happening inside, they thought the victims coming out were injured from the explosion. The virus was spreading rapidly through the air; people couldn't know what was happening. The infected started attacking the civilians and slowly they were starting to increase in numbers killing and eating all the victims they could find near the area the experiment was conducted.

People were in chaos among trying to escape the living dead.

Months passed, the virus spread throughout the planet, everyone is infected now but there are still people fighting for their lives while the infected increase in numbers every day.

After a year, infected have overrun most of the planet, hope on humanity salvation is very slim. Some small groups around the planet are still able to fend off the infected but they are not the only thing to look out from, wild animals run in towns scavenging for food, scavengers and bandits roam the abandoned cities looting valuables and destroying anything they find.

It's a new world with no rules, survive of the fittest...

Features
Features
- Game is being set in black and white apart of the colour red for blood. (Ala sin city)
- Your character doesn't fight you have to hide, sneak and run to survive.
- Your limited to how many items you can carry by the bag you have.
- You need to eat and drink to survive. (Eating also restores health while drinking also restores stamina to run) - Currently This feature is not implemented.
- Hidden stuff to find and hopefully even traps you can make to gain some time over the infected. - Currently This feature is not implemented.
- Getting bit or scratched by an infected can get you sick and will start to get damaged. Be sure to find or take some medicine to cure yourself or you'll die. - Currently This feature is not implemented.
- Everyone is infected even you but to trigger the infection you need to die. (Unless you get shot in the head or decapitated then you just die)
- You can run, sneak around enemies but running requires stamina so you cant run forever. (To regenerate stamina you either keep walking and regenerate slowly or stand still and regenerate faster)
- You can barricade doors to increase time it takes for infected to breach inside. (Barricading a door requires wood and hammer and once the door is barricaded you can no longer open the door to pass through unless it gets destroyed so think wisely.) - Currently This feature is not implemented.
- Game is set always in the night with some light sources here and there to provide guidance.
- Fade effect inside buildings when you pass from room to room. The previous room goes darker while the one you enter in gets brighter this is going to be used because it adds a little suspense on what could be in the next room.

Progress
Current demo takes place all in the hospital and ends once you go outside.

Chapter 1 is done.
Chapter 2 will start once I finish some stuff.

Known Issues
Sometimes tutorial pictures don't go away after the first Enter or E you press, keep pressing or hold the button and it will work. (Only 1 map has this issue atm but it's not a big deal breaker.)

-Small Update-

Hi guys just want to update a little the progress of the game with some new ideas and fixes.

Thanks to Dark Kyu and another person from another site I fixed some problems and enhanced others to make it look better.

First thing is I fixed the doors from having a very dark shadow to no shadow and fixed the wall on top of it so it no longer shows a part of your character when passing through.

Screen:

And other enhance is:

When you gain an item now the message shown shows an icon along the name so you know what it's what.

Screen:

(Wrong item to show screen off, it's something not hinted/forced on the player to find so one of the "hidden" or optional stuff you could find heh.)

Hope it doesn't confuse.

That's it, thanks for reading and feedback criticism is always welcomed!

I'm glad to see your demo is finally on smile.gif
I'll give it a try during Christmas holidays and write some review.
Anyway, for any script issue, just PM me as always.

I will also tell how I feel about your demo game at the later date.
Especially about how horror like the game's setting is.

Keep up a good work. smile.gif

Not much of an update with christmas and all but I'll just say I'm experimenting with the combat system and trying various possibilities to ensure it doesn't look awkward.

Now as a question I'd like some opinions on the damage the infected deal.

Currently I made it so an infected scratch deals around 1/3 of your health (May lessen it to 1/4 th of your health) and sometimes they can bite you which deals over 50% health (This won't change)

So is the damage too high? Mind you, you have absolute no protection on you and a bite is a bite that will deal a considerable amount of damage anyway.

I'm making separate "attacks" for the infected that are still realistic like an infected with no arms can only bite you this provides in certain diversity among them to ensure the element of surprise on new infected. (I won't do attacks like left 4 death so don't worry)

Anyway I'll test barricade against infected and try a conflict between scavengers and infected.

Will upload a video of the progress on the combat when I deem it's ready for the criticism.

It's absolutely realistic. In my opinion, you just have to make the areas in a certain manner, in order to let the player hide or escape from those freaks smile.gif
So you should have to be really careful while playing. An error... and you're sentenced to die in atrocious sufferings. I like it smile.gif
I wouldn't change the damage if I were you.

I slightly nerfed it as I know some would complain, now it takes 4/5 scratches to die or 2/3 bites. (Need to figure out how to remove completely critical from the game tough)

I'm also trying to add an "attack" which let's you push back the infected a square or two without dealing any damage.

At the moment I'm testing scavengers vs infected vs player once that starts working as intended I'll try on a different map with a different scenario where I can test barricade to stop infected and using objects to block them for a little time to let you escape.

And last but not least if a dude decides to share his particle script I might be able to add blood splatter on the hits which would make the combat so much better but I'm not relying on that as he might not share it.

Alright, so i played ur game, and here's some feedback... : p :

The pros:
- AMAZING mood and atmosphere. (!) The music, colours, tone.. were all amazing! \o/ /o\
- really incredible variety of mapping work and tiles...
- the arrows indicating where u can go r really handy
- the custom message boxes, information windows, inventory screens... etc. are all really amazing and look professional >.<
- i love the PDA idea, the magnifying glass that pops-up, and all the other little details/ graphical work... amg, so koool. D:
- no errors or glitches i think

The cons:
- The delay for opening the menu on ESC is a little long >.<\
- one or two typos (thats good)
- it's prolly a good idea to maybe mention a little bit more about the plot/ family as u progress..?
- there's a lot to investigate... kinda a lot.. too.. much... />.</ maybe remove some of the stuff + not make it all say u cant use it/ its useless?
- i think the character's faceset looks slightly too young for him >.<
- kinda a long while before something happens + idk, the protagonist doesnt rly say anything about the blood/ fences at the end...? \>.<\

Thats all i really have to report. >.< Again, this is just my feedback, i hope i dont offend u or anything. /'o\

..Ur game is seriously really good though! i hope u know that. Actually, it's one of the best horror games/ demos ive ever played..
Sincerely, its extremely impressive. : )) i hope/ bet it will become something phenomenal. >.<

- I managed to get stuck on one of the discussion events.
- Your game is very atmospheric.
- Walking and even more walking. Did check out a lot of objects even though the game points out what objects are actually important to proceed further.
- Having a journal as an item is redundant as you can't use it via inventory also. Letting also use a journal via inventory too would remove the redundancy.
- I liked the game.

@Magical

First of all thank you for trying out my demo smile.gif

As for your cons:

- The delay for opening the menu on ESC is a little long >.<\
This doesn't happen on my pc it's tied to the performance your computer can handle, I'm sorry but the only thing I could do to make it faster for you is remove the visible background when I open the menu.

- one or two typos (thats good)
That's good I thought there might be more, any idea in which area are those typos?

- it's prolly a good idea to maybe mention a little bit more about the plot/ family as u progress..?
Well later on you will get more information wink.gif

Spoiler
In the first demo you can see the prologue with his family for a little background story and once you find Senae's tag your character does find the name familiar but doesn't know why smile.gif

- there's a lot to investigate... kinda a lot.. too.. much... />.</ maybe remove some of the stuff + not make it all say u cant use it/ its useless?
You'll need to investigate/scavenge to find provisions later on I just handed out some easily in the hopsital for a start which can be missed too if you don't investigate the rooms.

At first I was doing custom text for every thing but it gets so time consuming and very hard to type something different every time so I had to copy paste on a lot of them, I'm sorry for that but there's text on almost everything in every room it would take ages to have custom text for everything.

Spoiler
There's a medkit you can loot for some bandages and bandage rolls after you take the doctor's clothes and you can find some coins at the first floor to buy a drink from the vending machine wink.gif

- i think the character's faceset looks slightly too young for him >.<
I believe so too.

I added a beard on the spirte's face but it doesn't make him look older :/ Sadly I had to use vxace face set creator but if anyone is up to make the face set older looking that would be awesome.

- kinda a long while before something happens + idk, the protagonist doesn't rly say anything about the blood/ fences at the end...? \>.<\
That was chapter one, you're still confused and don't know what's happening I assure you there is action in chapter 2 I'm actually testing the combat system.

As for no text in the last map I asked twice before releasing the demo if I should make a small peak on how it's outside but got no response except from jens so ultimately I did it as something rushed.

Tough I'll need to test it in the future as I'm worried the save won't work if you save in the outside map so save in the last room before going outside.

Thank you again for trying out my project and thank you for the constructive criticism smile.gif

@Clord

Thank you for trying my project but your points are really vague I don't know how can I help you in some of them.

- I managed to get stuck on one of the discussion events.
If you got stuck in the PDA room hold Enter or E and the message goes right away. (This is stated in the first post of the thread in known issues)

- Walking and even more walking. Did check out a lot of objects even though the game points out what objects are actually important to proceed further.
Chapter 1 was more about mystery and trying to understand what's going on, chapter 2 will involve action and human contact.

In the hospital most stuff and handed to you easily, in the future you won't be hand hold on finding stuff unless it's a key item. (By key item I mean something that is needed for the menu or something like that not notes or keys those will need investigation)

- Having a journal as an item is redundant as you can't use it via inventory also. Letting also use a journal via inventory too would remove the redundancy.
As I said before journal, health monitor, pda and such while those are menus they take space in your bag however I can make it so the diary launches the diary scene.

Thank you again for trying the project and hopefully you will respond with more information on were exactly you got stuck.

Er.. idk... -D-\ r u sure about that? Cuz i run stuff like Penumbra or MMOs, and can run 1GB ram pics in photoshop....
Everything else is seamless in the demo too, so im not sure opening a menu would b difficult for my compter.. - D-

I dont rly remember :2 hahaha. One is around the diagnosis of the baby though i think, the other one is when u jump down into the 2nd part of the hospital.

Well.. i kno that. >.<\ i played through ur game. i just mean that i dont feel like the family is rly mentioned after the beginning; like i mean it kind of seems like the protagonist started off trying to find the girl + trying to figure what happened w/ his family, but then after a room or two his goals change. Like maybe u can put a photo of his family somewhere that triggers a flashback or something?

Well.. I mean, its just kind of feels like there're things to investigate at every step u take. Actually, my sister is the one who said this even. >.<
It is just kind of overwhelming + frustrating. I think itd b great to maybe remove some of the investigative options.
Also, its totally kool if they all say that. I didnt rly mean that literally. : p

QUOTE

if he needs to look older, all his face rly needs could prolly just b to have his eyes smaller, his nose built up more, and his jawline + chin more defined. Xp (^D^) u could prolly do it actually too if u cant find anyone else. B-) : ))

QUOTE

Er.. Im confused..? -D- i just meant that theres not that many scares in the demo? '-'
Also, yea, maybe that will b in the sequel but... we're talking about the 1st chapter, we're talking about what u have not what u will have. '^'
I mean, if i made an analogy, id compare this to an author; a starting author wouldnt start writing a second book after being told their first publication had a slow start, or awkward dialogue; it would probably b more efficient if the beginning author just worked on the first book, instead of promising that their second book will fix the first. Or even for the starting author to have an editor or two. '^'

..Ive worked on booklet publications before, on designing and printing Tshirts for organizations, in rewording conferences or speeches w/ politicians, and in editing as well as conducting and reporting research studies. Rly, editing can b very useful and i hope u know that as a starting creator, using a sequel to buffer for ur first work might not b a good idea.
I hope my post does not offend u-- i am just trying to challenge ur ideas a little. (-D- ) its ur game though and its alright/ up to u to do whatever u want.

- It's more the rpg maker xp engine in itself that has a bad performance, should have worded it better. (Tough low end laptops/pcs might have issues too)

- The scenes where you meet your character's life before everything went to ruins was in the past to show you a glimpse of what was your player's life like before he fell into a coma. When you wake up from the coma you don't remember anything, showing many stuff in advance would make the story look ridiculous in my opinion.

- Well let's just say I wanted to have some sort of text message on everything to not make it weird specially in a game where you have to scavenge to find stuff to loot. (Some objects have text but are not exactly necessary to interact with like a bookshelf it's just there so if people wanted to see what there was in the bookshelf they would get X message not nothing happening)

Utilizing the magnifying glass only on important stuff would just nullify any point of having it in the first place imo. "Why should I press on those 5 lockers when only that desk shows me the magnifying glass?" That's what would happen if the magnifying glass showed only on important stuff, destroying any sense of discovery.

- Most if not all games first part of the new game is either a tutorial or a "prologue" with story scenes and such, this game will be story driven so everything will be shown with time. Chapter 1 is only just the first chapter of the story, chapter 2 won't be a new game but progressing from it's previous chapter.

Also last part was meant mostly for the blood on the fence which has no text or anything.

You can't compare a book which must be fully complete before publish with a game demo specially if the game is not complete yet.

And don't worry I'm not offended or anything tough sometimes your posts confuse me a little smile.gif

This was AMAZING.
This is one of the best horror games made in RPG Maker that I ever played.
Dude, teach me how to do it! I ALWAYS wanted to do a horror game but i know too little...
Whatever, I just loved it. You're the BEST!

Kinda small update as I'm having some issues with the combat system as it's making the enemies too dumb to make certain stuff like barricade work :/

I'll try asking for help again on the forum that created blizz abs hopefully I can get some help on solving this issue.

-Update-

Mostly this small update is regarding combat as I tweaked it a little here and there but not much to go in detail.

I managed to make a scenario where there is you the player, a group(2) of scavengers(Enemies) and infected to see if they would work out. For the most part it works well but there seems to be some issues with priority as if I go near them after they kill the target they come after me even if there is still enemies around them.

The worse problem at the moment is regarding indoor combat. I created a small room leading to another room but there's a door (Which is essentially an enemy for the infected if it's closed) that is blocking the path for the infected that wants to eat me but the infected either tries to reach me regardless and obviously stops as he can't pass through the obstacle or I have to open/close door fast and the infected will attack the door but may stop if I move. This is silly as he can't see me behind the wall.

If I can't fix the combat I have no idea how can I progress the game sadly.

I'll try my best.

Nice job. I love the atmosphere in the game.
I met a problem when trying to save the game: a window opened saying there is a bug with save data1, and the game shut down.

Thanks smile.gif

You need to create a folder named "Save File" without the "" in the same place of audio, data and graphics folders.

I made one when I compressed the game but with compression the folder was removed :/

To avoid this problem, simply add any file in that folder (even a README.txt) and the compression will retain that folder wink.gif
Unfortunately, the compression program doesn't include empty folders.
