Its the main selling point of your game. People see the screen shot, people investigate the thread. every time I posted a screen shot, the amount of people viewing my thread went up. Its a proven fact. weather or not they posted was up to them, how ever it is a simple and main effective way to sell your game.
You are aware that you are contradicting everything you said before, right? Now you're saying the screenshot thread is just to sell your game. Which proves my point that its INTENT for feedback failed.
yes and no. while the sole purpose is to say "heres my new map" which may lead to people reading your thread on your game people CAN give you feed back and what not....
QUOTE (Adrien. @ Mar 6 2012, 09:50 PM)
Getting feed back on ideas, conceptual maps and other in game maps is not a bad thing. How ever littering your game thread with them is as it takes the attention away from what your trying to sell - which is your game.
Actually it is a bad idea. Posting for feedback on everything is not a good practice and if you have to litter your thread with those kind of posts, then you might need to reflect on how you are designing your game. When the same people post again and again in the screenshot thread too often people get annoyed too. It happened in the past.
I agree, How ever what are you to do when your half way through developing and your thinking "I want to add this new feature...." or "I have this new map and its not quite finished but I want community feed back..."
QUOTE (Adrien. @ Mar 6 2012, 09:50 PM)
thats what every one essentially does is "spam the screen shot thread" whats your point? the screen shot thread isnt meant for in depth feed back. yes some people will give it and that's good as it was one of the largest sources of inspiration, ideas, feed back and community activity. How ever the idea is to just post a screen shot[/color]
Again, you're contradicting just everything you said in your last post.
I was wrong - yes. How ever the sole puspose is to post a map, 9/10 some one will say something about the map or screen shot
QUOTE (Adrien. @ Mar 6 2012, 09:50 PM)
but it does. its been proven. its how I found darkhalos games, How i found sukuras (sorry for the fail spelling) games and how I learned about mapping in general....
But again, this wasn't the use INTENDED for it, and this is why we removed it.
So where am I suppose to learn new techniques, ideas and get inspiration from? this is what the screen shot thread is for. you post a screen shot. some one sais "wow amazing map - how did you do that?" or they comment on what needs to be fixed or changed. I can say from the ST I have improved my style of mapping greatly...
QUOTE (Adrien. @ Mar 6 2012, 09:50 PM)
See the red - also I think unless your a game designer/developer you don't see the impact the screen shot thread really has...
Believe me, I know the impact of a screenshot. The entire point is that you can find them elsewhere in context.
Ok where?

And unless there's going to be a required amount people are allowed to comment, how would it solve people going, looks good, needs more trees? I almost think that you'd need dedicated mappers or writers for each category to ensure that it wouldn't be that way. Which, as much as I'd LOVE it, it's too complex and requires too much dedication to implement. Some people will always say little or not have much to add, and while "needs more trees" isn't a great comment, it is still someone trying to offer their help in making it look better. A person can always continue the conversation and ask "where would you put more trees" or "What kind of trees" and "Needs more trees" is better than someone just saying, "Something is off" or "I don't like it" or "looks empty".
But this isn't an issue with screenshot threads specifically. This is an issue with users. Posting in a game topic won't suddenly inspire people to write more. And they'd be warned if they wrote little, due to spam. So why not stretch this rule to a screenshot thread?

I guess it would be better, but it requires a scorched earth moderation policy - warn users who post too little content and delete the trash. It's a double-edged sword.

its really not. Because why should you be forced to comment on the one above yours if you have nothing to say about it? why force users to write paragraphs of detailed thought when they just want to post a screen shot. if they want to give feed back sure. the only thing you should be moderating is the trolls and those who go way off topic....

Actually you are wrong there - we did not always have it that you had to comment on the previous screen. This was made a rule to stop members being selfish and only thinking of their own screenshot and not bothering to help others.

pfft. That's like trying to bake bread with no yeast. It can't be done. Maybe people don't have anything to say about yours? Rewrite this; Say you posted a pic, and wanted feedback. They would just look at it, and not post anything about it, and go straight on to theirs. I mean, as you said, why should they post any feedback on it?
Do unto others as you want them to do unto you, and all that jazz. Your not forced, it's just common courtesy.

Admittedly, Iv'e missed the screen shot thread . To me it was a quick-view thread on new map design and visual creativity that kept us in touch with other peoples work in progress, whether be the novice or from the more advanced. I actually learnt alot right from the original thread many moons ago, and its still inspiring to see snippets of work being posted. If it was regulated to say three screenshots per post, kept to a minimum size say (some were horrendous), a regularity, I would warm well to a screenshot thread return. As to project-boost audiences, yes, it does...but thats not such a bad thing.

I know I was here when that rule was made and I thought it dumb and smart

Im not saying I as in me would not comment - I comment on everything. but i DONT expect it back unless I asked for it.
Like I said the sole purpose is to post a screen shot and move on or you can comment and say what you like or dont like about other peoples work as most people do...
but enforce it? theres always that 1 person who posts and leaves....

But why post a screenshot in the first place if you don't want feedback?
The thread is for people to learn on their mistakes, fix small/big problems and/or seeking opinions on their new artistic changes that might save them time if people don't like it.
because people might want to show off what their working on with out creating a whole thread for a game thats not even under way yet. like I said 9/10 the people posting are looking for and giving feed back.

I really don't know why this has become such a heated discussion, I mean, really guys, arguing with people about whether or not you can post a screenshot of your game? And not expect feedback when you want it, when your posting it in a thread that gets flooded basically, with screenshots that not even half the people give the feedback on your post that you may or may not want? <--(lolwut O_o)
This topic is just getting sillier and sillier. We should just all go get some ice-cream, cool down and come back later.
my understanding of why this thread was created was to ask for the screen shot thread back....and I would like to see it come back. It being closed was the silly thing....
if we just re-opened it, life would be fine.

And so say all of us-
I think maybe this topic needs closing and feedback taken to Titan's thread where he and Sai (who are the mods for the area) can give their slant on it all -
Maybe compromise can be reached re the screenshot thread - but as part of the other disussion please.
So you post a screenshot of a new game that doesn't have a thread because it's still "not being worked on" and don't want feedback? I can't understand your reasoning here.
If I'm going to post in a thread that let's people post screenshots so that they can get help or feedback I expect some feedback to see if I'm doing the right thing or if people are liking what I'm doing.
See, this is something I saw you do in the screenshot thread which I didn't find particularly useful in what the purpose of the thread was. You post a screenshot someone tells you xxx should be less blurred you ignore them or don't bother replying and several days later you post new screenshots with the same style.
Why post in a thread where people help, give opinions and feedbacks when you don't want it? Might aswell do 2 threads then 1 for posting screenshots with no feedback rule and another for mapping improvements maybe this would stop people from advertising their games in the threads that should be meant for helping others.
@Resource dragon I don't believe I'm raging I'm being curious and polite throughout the whole thread, infact I'm kinda stuck here instead of working on my project to fix the problems I'm having from my events
[Edit]
Why should this thread be closed when the suggestion of titanhex makes things more complicated then they are?
