P.I.E - Player Interactive Exercise

Platform- RMXP

What is it?

The Player Interactive Exercise (or P.I.E for short) is a very short, 10-map game built using Enterbrain's RPG Maker XP software. It was created as a bit of a fun way to determine how players learn. In this case, does the player find a solution to the puzzle by using Trial & Error? Or do they use Observation and Intuition? Or do they use a mix of both? After completing the 10 maps, the player is told which method they used in each individual map, and then finally their overall learning style. In the end, it's just a bit of fun.

Before you begin...

While the point of this game is that the player figures everything out by themselves (which is the reason I'm not showing screenshots from the game), there are two pieces of advice that I want to give you for playing P.I.E.

1. If you're stuck, examine the map carefully for oddities. There is a clue pointing you in the right direction or telling you what to do on each map (with the exception of Maps 1 and 10).

2. You have a keyboard in-front of you - just remember that.

And that's it! I hope you enjoy P.I.E, and I encourage you to leave a response saying what result you got in the forum thread on this website.

Notes

If you have enjoyed the music in this game, I highly recommend checking out Kevin MacLeod's website here: http://incompetech.com/
He's an excellent composer and incredibly generous, offering hundreds of top-quality musical compositions royalty free to developers like myself.

Thanks! happy.gif

Thank you for making the changes. It look a lot better now and I hope many people will try it out and post their results here.

It's great that you're using Kevin Macleod's music. He's a familiar composer even to me. However, it may be wise to write that you're simply using his royalty free music, and link his website. This will help people discern that you're not actually working face-to-face with him, but rather utilizing the resources he's provided to the hobbyist community and allow them to do so too. But this is only a suggestion and not necessary, even in the legal realm.

Yeah, he's an excellent composer. I had a note on my website about that, so I just added it to my post.

Thanks a lot for your help Titanhex - I appreciate it! biggrin.gif

It took me WAY longer than it should have to figure out the super-simple solution in the second map. xD

I got about half and half with Trial & Error and Observation & Intuition with an overall score/ranking/whatever of Trial & Error. Totally fits. Good little game you've got here--something different, short, and interesting. happy.gif Part of me wishes there were more learning styles, but I guess there aren't many more that you could put in this kind of game, huh?

Haha, don't worry - I've seen a couple of people scratch their heads on that one tongue.gif

Thank you very much - I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Well, I started off with the idea of having the two learning styles and made the puzzles with those two types in mind. So the game would have to be a bit different and more elaborate to accomodate more learning styles. Still I agree it could be very interesting! happy.gif

Cool game indeed
I mainly did Trail & Error for the whole game.
I just pressed a bunch of buttons and stuff. So I guess that's what I am.

Do you plan to make a second one? Expansion? Different tests?
Or have you ran out of ideas?

I'll defiantly show this to my friends!

Very interesting idea for a game! It was pretty much trial and error for every map except for maybe 3. I use Kevin MacLeod's music too! Well, thanks for the game!

@kayden997 - Thanks! Haha, sounds like it. Well, I do have ideas, but I don't think I'll make another P.I.E - at least, not for the foreseeable future. And thanks again - hope they enjoy it happy.gif

@Philip - Ah right - yeah, his music is really useful. No problem - I'm glad you enjoyed it!
