Shadyone, first off, you've a lot of fantastic work posted on here. It's REALLY good, you're right on the money in writing music with what or how you're feeling. It's ironic, not a lot of people are able to come up with too many decent songs at a small portion of time, so it's commendable that you're able to write many good songs, keep it up! smile.gif I really liked Musical Diary Day 4: Thursday's Retribution, I enjoyed what instruments you used in a bass signature, I can hear some thunder sound interpreted with timpani, sounds neat. It's short, but definitely to the point, it could work as a short cutscene in a game. wink.gif Looking forward to hearing more submissions. happy.gif

Btw, awesome attempt in writing a dubstep song. I've been trying to write a couple of dubstep songs, but it's a litte more difficult than it sounds. lol

Hey, thanks for listening ^^ Glad you liked them.
I've been trying to improve my skills as fast as I can because I wish to make music for money, as there is an awesome festival in a few months, and I don't have much money for it. I don't want to just rush straight to commissions just yet, as I don't want to compose bad music for people and rip them off! So practice, practice and more practice for me until I feel like I'm confident enough to start up a commission shop thing.

I agree dubstep is extremely hard to make, I looked up random tutorials around google to get an idea of how to start. But it sounds more like techno when compared to something like Skrillex's dubstep or someone else.

Besides, your classical stuff is uber awesome x]

This is pretty interesting, I get mixed feelings when I hear this song: it has a nice content feeling that is masking the feeling of loneliness and despairity that one is truly feeling, I like how you have a range of emotions flowing into a whole song. Listening to the strings section, preferably the violin solo, sounds really nice and admittedly sounds very nicely syncopated, but after thoroughly listening to this song, it seems that the piano is a little too dependent on the violin meaning the notes are being played the same, try giving it some personality by perhaps adding a short lead section for the piano on a couple of the verses. The song between 2:23 - 2:34 has a slight repetition, nothing wrong with that, but with a few tune-ups, it can be a memorable repetitive section. If you want, I can throw a suggestion out there: slightly increase the master volume from the beginning and the end of the repetitive verse and slow the tempo down at around the 4th bar and then return back to the original tempo and volume for the next section. smile.gif

Other than that, good use of note rests! It tells me what you're really feeling and having some of those pauses on some section does just that. All in all, I think it's well done, a lot of thought put into this. You're definitely on the right track here! I'm eagerly looking forward to hearing this when it's finished. happy.gif

This is really nice, very calming. I will admit, I feel like the intro lasted a bit too long since single notes on the piano don't offer so much, but that prolonging made the entrance of the strings that much nicer. I really liked at 1:28 when the melody is brought up into the higher register, it sounds quite nice. All in all, it's a nice and pretty peace, but I do agree with Fataliante's comment regarding giving the piano more personality. There's nothing wrong with doubling the melody, but for the whole piece is questionable. Right now if you took the piano/violin away, the tambre of it would be gone, but everything would still be there in notation wise. The song would still really be the song, but with one less instrument. If you add harmonies, a lead, or a counter melody and then take those away, you'd be taking away much more than just an extra instrument. They're two separate entities, so treat them as such and let them stray from eachother.

Overall it's an enjoyable piece, good work happy.gif

Wow, it looks like everyone else beat me to commenting, lol.
Anyway, I completely agree with what they said.

I also wanted to mention that I think your FL Studio videos are really cool and informative (if I were using FL Studio I'd definitely ask you questions if I were lost in it, lol).

Keep up the great work, I always like your music but I always love to see improvement too. happy.gif

Actually, with todays modern technology, professional sounding production is easier than ever. In fact, Misha Mansoor goes to show the power of effective home production.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3PfiL17YeI

This song was actually recorded at home in his small home studio near the beginning of his career, and he still produces all their music.

However you're right about years of training xD

For your dubstep jam thing, I thought you had some cool ideas, you just need to step up your production method and fill in the empty space. I'd say replace your samples, but you may not be able to afford new samples/ "afford" new samples wink.gif so heres what you should do.

For your kick, try to step down the pitch a little, and take out that muddy low mid range. Bring up an EQ on it, and try bringing your bass end up, your low mids down, your higher mids up and highs to a fair spot between them. For the snare, take out the clap sound entirely, and replace with a snare. With dubstep, you want a snare with a massive almost, smack in the face while getting punched in the chest sound. Bring up your upper mids and try to add a little distortion to the high end of your snare; which adds a nice "fizzle" to the snare sound. The hihat sounds alright, but needs a little variation in velocity, and bringing up the high end on the hi hat will make it sound brighter and make it mix better with the rest of the song. Bring it's volume down in the mix as well.

Raise the pitch in the synth in the beginning. It's too muddy as of right now to really try and lead the melody incoming. I like the "Di di doo" kind of sound; for lack of better description, that comes in. Also, the space between the beginning and the drop is really awkward. Try adding an empty reverb sound or a sweep there, to keep the listener from thinking the song is over; but providing a false ending.

Also; if I could suggest some excellent programs for helping you get a sweet dubstep sound, I'd try nexus, massive, vengeance essential drum kits, and generally a good selection of personal samples and sounds smile.gif

Keep working on it dood, sounds good wink.gif

Listening to it again, I noticed that alot of the bass is ALL low sine. While this is ok for anyone with subs, it's inaudible to anyone else, and hence creates long, awkward silences where the bass is literally... too low.

Wow I keep forgetting I have this topic XD! Thanks for all the honest critique everyone! =) It helps a lot and I really appreciate it. I'll be taking this advice into careful consideration when I start my next piece, which will be a battle theme. I hope I can pull it off because I've only ever attempted a battle theme once and that was when I first started composing with Magix.

I had Nexus, but I've since lost it when my external hard drive died. Too lazy to get it now, I know that massive is a good product, but I don't have the money for that currently and I'll have to check out this "Vengeance" drum kit, I've been needing a drum kit vst.

Mini update!
Haven't been doing much lately due to being busy with my AMV but since that is pretty much done, I have started on a new song!

So far I have this working on it as I type this.

It's really coming along now. ^^
I love the melody; are you planning on doing a full orchestration of it, or just a piano piece? =]

Oh man it's been ages since I've done much musical stuff but here's a remix I made today, my first ever so I know it won't sound good. But eh, I wanted to try it. At least I get better from doing stuff like this XD

Sounds like you have all the right instruments and ideas, but the compilation seems to not go anywhere really. I guess that's typical in dubstep, but it seems to be missing an integral part... Hmm...
