Help with action/Indie game maker, I am completley lost Options

when I first saw Indie game maker and I thaught it looked intresting when I played some of the sample games I was very impressed and I thaught I would have fun with indie game maker and when I tried using it I was completley lost I have no Idea how the menu's work I dont know how to make the player, gadgets, enemies and I bareley understand how the mapping system works.

I'm trying to make a kirby styled platformer jumping action game with the copy abilities and everything but I am in desperate need of help in learning how to use indie game maker.

Also is it a good idea to start a game from scratch?

any advice help or tutorial links for getting started would be greatly apreciated

Edit: I am starting to grasp the Indie game maker interface a bit more now but i still have to problem that I dont know how to make characters, enemies, (like continue screens) and Title screens. so far I have made one map but I have no clue how to play test it yet.

I would definitely recommend browsing through the editor of the sample games or using the generator, I think that will be a good way to start.

To create characters you would first import the graphics to that character to be used as animations (they can be any size, but make sure each frame is within the same dimensions. Something taken directly from the spriter's resource wouldn't work). Then you would go to the gadget editor and make your animations (walking, jumping, attacking, etc.). Once that is all set, you would create a gadget for the player or enemies or whatnot (I'm not sure how to specifically do it, as my trial has already expired and I'm still learning myself).

If you go into your program files folder > Enterbrain > IG Maker > Help, there should be a help file which would explain some of the stuff you are asking.

Oddly, when I start it crashes.
It never did this before.
I thought the problem was fixed after it loaded the other day but now its back to that crash state.

Can anyone help?
