Hey kids want a brand new DS? Want one that has everything yours has now but in 3D?
You do! Excellent, here you go...

...oh yeah, there's a 2D option that you must use in order for it not to have long term damaging effects on your vision.

Yep that's true. Nintendo's released a warning about the 3DS. Though people don't seem that bothered.
QUOTE
"Since the Nintendo 3DS can be changed to 2D to avoid any effects on young children's vision, it is possible for anyone to enjoy playing it." But not of course 3D.

With that also:
QUOTE
"If your physical condition worsens or you become ill, please stop playing at once," .

At least they're taking steps to try to avoid problems in kids.
QUOTE
Nintendo is going as far as to include 3D parental controls for the Nintendo 3DS.

Though I know of a lot of parents that simply leave it to their child to switch it on, put a game in and get playing. I mean that's their primary market, kids and younger generations. Are they trying to hard to keep up with other advancements or are they trying to protect themselves for worst case scenarios?

It's said now that you're recommended to take a break every 30min whilst on a standard DS, so what's for the 3DS? Keeping in mind that you're eyes are being tricked and focusing so something that's not where you're seeing it as.

The effects of 3D is a trick of the brain, it's not actually there. So it is indeed harmful if looked at for too long. However, it's a bit exaggerated.
Nintendo is just trying to avoid themselves from a lawsuit, like any other company. So they put strict rules, even if it doesn't make sense. It isn't obligatory, but in the court of law, they see so otherwise.

Heck, I play my iz3d games (n64 games, mostly) for hours on end, they never screw me up.
Maybe it's just because my eyes are pretty much colorblind anyway xD

So there are definitely effects on the eyes, but I play video games for a LOT longer than just 30 minutes, never had any harm befall me. Playing for that amount of time is just lame.

I'd say, If your eyes start to hurt, turn it off.

The American Optometronic Association says it's actually good to play the 3DS for kids under 6 years. They say it's a good test for the eyes and by playing the 3DS with a 3D effect, they can see if there's an abnormity in the eyes earlier in the eye-development.

Thing is, who's right? I think the AOA's right, because Nintendo probably says this to prevent people from accusing them for not warning them for the eye-effect. I think Nintendo are being procausious here.
