I'm now just getting back to work on things, will be absent for most of the week do to changing computer cases and because removing the power supply from my GPU is a pain in the **** I'll be taking it slow and plan where to route all the cables.

Now because my time is limited but not that limited I decided to use unity for my 2D RPG, I find RPG Maker utterly limited and because I know what I want I decided to write it myself in Unity.
Unity was made for 3D games but can be used for 2D games pretty easily, there are tools for making tile-maps, there's sprite manager 2, 2d toolkit, mapping editors like tidy and unitile and toolkits like uni2d which is what I'll be using for the most part and it seems a lot more versatile than using a tile map editor.

I'll be releasing a small demo, basically Mario Level 1-1 using Uni2D and updated graphics as mario from nes needs it but won't go overboard.

I would recommend Unity for those who still want a editor/toolkit but don't have the time for strict C++.

Unless you are a scripter Unity is NOT for you, if you have the skills and knowledge to use it more power to you, I used it and I was just completely lost, RPG makers are a LOT more simple to use, of course they might be more limited then unity but to compare the 2 engines is just silly, you average game loving novice, which is at least 70% of this site can use RPG maker to some degree but would be completely lost in Unity.

Im sure you are aware that out of 100 ppl on here maybe 1 or 2 know how to script. But that being said I wish you luck cause Unity does look really cool so im sure you will be able to do a lot with it, I wish I had the time to learn it better myself.

Unlike Rpgmaker you're not necessarily scripting, your programming the game because Unity literally gives you jack to start with but everything is there in the editor or you can program it yourself. Also Ruby to Python wouldn't go to well but has a similar syntax.

Also at the last minute I chose 2D Toolkit over Uni2D mainly because I can still use unity's editor instead of being restricted to an imported editor from the asset store. Plus 2D Toolkit had a lot more to offer at an additional $20 price tag, $65 isn't much just for an add-on these days.

I do want to point out that Unity has a very friendly community, I would say friendly than Rpg makers community mainly because the Rm community has a ton of jerks.. Anyone remember Dark Dominion back in 2000-2003/4? Heck even Gaming World?(pre-2006)

Don't be afraid if you get lost as there is a lot of beginner tutorials and even for specific games like Mario heck even 2D Zelda - a link to the past but they're bare bones but just shows you how to get started and how things are twined together.

You would learn more from Unity than you would from Rpg Maker as Rm practically generates your game for you.. but for an absolute beginner I would use Boo - Unity's Programming/Scripting Language, or C# over Javascript..

I would say RPGs aren't complicated in Unity as Unity has a few trigger events you can program and you can set those to specific game objects and thus creating NPC which you can make a script call to your battle functions, game dialog speeches, or just something random for testing purposes.

I would like to see Enterbrain release a version of Rpg Maker that allows the user to define collisions by poligons or shapes and at specific sizes but not preset. And also open the mapping editor to where everything is programmed specific for that level not for the entire engine which isn't that customizable as you really can't modify Rpg Makers Map Engine.. legally anyway.

It all sounds so technical lol, but I will agree with you that the RPG world does have a look of jerks, im getting hate messages from 2 people at the moment which is really sad, I did notice the unity community was very active, thats why I actually spent some time trying to learn it, if I got the welcome there I got in the RPG sites I wouldnt even waste my time.

It seems you also know a good mix of tools to use for your project, I have googled to death the latest and greats of the game engines, some were very interesting, but when I saw the 800 euro price tag to make commercial games with it I just didnt know what to say.

I do believe a unity style system or even unity itself is the future/way to go, im just not at that lvl yet.

And for the love of god let me say its nice to have a conversation on a RRR site without being hated on tongue.gif

I stopped actual programming once I got my 10/10 thanks to my some advanced computer knowledge compared to typical computer user.

It was also back in the day odd sight to see less than ten year old learning to program stuff like games. Granted it was Basic programming language on the MSX and PC. Then I learned Visual Basic 6 somewhat.

Once the good game making tools started to appear with scripting and everything, it lost some of it's attractiveness to learn those now "obsolete" programming languages.

However I still gotta say that the Unity engine's weakness is somewhat scarce options menu that the most games bring. Engine believes that it scales for your computer without asking. It also seems to be many indies wet dream.

Unity would be a good move, but it comes with a steep learning curve, I haven't taken the time to learn it, however it's on my lappy for those times where I love to play around in it.

I don't feel that RM is limited, there's just so much you can achieve via scripting.. hell I've even seen a 3D script being made a long time ago, and it was astonishing.

But hey that's just my own opinion, good luck with Unity, I look forward to seeing what you have made with it. happy.gif

I wouldn't say unity has a steep learning curve but a wee bit larger than rpg maker, Unity is well documented heck rpg maker is lacking in documentation by comparison plus the community is better well that's subjective I guess.

If you want 2D just get 2D toolkit and call it a day plus if you want 2.5D it's easily done.

anyways I completely spaced out today, slept in til like 2Pm..

If anyone wants the mario sprites I made here ya go, just did a quick edit of the original nes sprites.

For anyone without prior programming knowledge, they wouldn't be able to do much with the engine. That's why I said it has a steep learning curve.

It's easily done because you're using a 3D engine to create 2D/2.5D logic, you also get much more power because of that.

Anyway, I'm going to keep an eye on this. Good Luck! happy.gif

Once I get better I'll be releasing stuff to the asset store, once I finish a RPG engine I'll release it to the asset store for $25.

Unity 4 has been released, this month (don't remember the exact date) so I'll be working on several 2D tutorials mainly starting with the basics and moving on up. I'm also new to unity, so this aught to be fun.

Unity 4 does support the latest version of Direct X and OpenGL.

So can't wait to update! Will probably wait til the weekend to do anything.
