We could set it in a parallel world, with all things still the same, with the exception that, in this world, the Avatar died a few centuries ago while in Avatar mode, resulting in the end of the Avatar cycle. I'm good with either, really, just throwing suggestions.

I think this is the best thing to do.
Just seems like the simplest way to go about it.

I hate parallel worlds, it makes everything seem less real. It's just an excuse basically.
Plut it seems to contradict a lot of what avatar's about. You know what I mean?

I agree. It also gives us the chance to establish our own story, without fear of contradicting any of the canon.

We all know the canon and how it goes so it's likewe are trying to not be like the original story....
I hope we can make some sort of compromise..?
No? Fine, I hope it will be good either way. If the avatar is dead will there be airbenders? I kind of don't want there to be airbenders..you know what I mean? It's like they're going to be non-existant in the show so introducing them into a story makes it different from what we+e used to seeing. Are you guys okay with that? What elements are there going to be? All of them? Not sure if there really is a reason to include air but do the characters have to...for example if you're air element, do you have to be an air nomad? Just asking.

I'm good either ways, particularly speaking. We could go with Darkblade's idea of the Fire Nation aiming to attack a small settlement of Air Bender survivors, who are being protected by our group of mercenaries, this way, air benders are allowed, but they'd be very limited. We could RP them all going there first, then they actually fighting off the fire nation (And actually being able to win, since it's a parallel universe) and, depending on how things go, taking things up to the Fire Kingdom.

I think it's fire NATION, silly. And sure that might help but if they are mercenaries, why are they going to help the air nomads? Who hired them and stuff?

The fire Nation would have initially hired the mercenaries to either do a scouting mission or clear out the air nomads (From what I remember, Air Nomads don't really fight, so it wouldn't have taken much to clear out a bunch of monks), but for some reason, they change sides to help the air nomads.
Could be that the mercenaries are a mixed bunch of people from each of the four elements and the Fire Nation planned to throw the non-fire elements into prison straight after the original planned mission is done. Being war buddies, the mercenaries wouldn't be fond of that idea.
Or maybe the Mercenaries realise that the Fire Nation is a much bigger threat to the world than what they first thought.
Or maybe something as simple as they just aren't being paid enough.

Or maybe the mercenaries don't really give a damn about either side and think up a huge plot to screw both sides.

Well, either way, the Mercenaries have to be hired, if by the fire nation, change sides for some reason.
If by Air Nomads, the Air Nomads need to own something that the Mercenaries want, after all, they aren't freedom fighters.

What if it a world without food and the mercenaries side against the fire nation in order to cannabalize them because they're the biggest nation and therefore the most (humans) food!

Just kidding...

Lol I would like if the mercenaries had a different plan for it all rather than 'follow rules' and did something dynamic. I'm a writer and if y'all need help making the plot then I'm heerrree.

I thought the thread maker had some sort of master plan.
I need to know the basic plot first like what's happening did aang die or is he not found yet or did he die and this is the time period where we don't know who the new avatar that was born is..or something? Liike I think the plot sound better if this is the time after aang died but we don't know who the new avatar is yet. And it doesn't have to do with republic city or anuthing... like it can take place somewhere fictional (not according to the canon at all, like the rest of the story).

Hmm?

Since it takes place in an alternate timeline although (possibly) taking place in the same time period as the TV show, its entirely possible Aang was killed when his temple was attacked by the Fire Nation.

If we're going with the Island plot, it would be taking place in a fictional area.

...Uhm...Hello? Anyone?

How about this:

In this parallel universe, the legend of the Avatar ended hundreds of years ago when one of the avatars in the cycle was killed during Avatar Mode, ever since then, the cycle was broken and new avatars ceased to be born. With the Avatar out of the way to keep the elements from leaving balance, the latest generations of fire lords have all been preparing and shaping up their weapons and equipment to war, not all of the Fire Nation was in agreement with this path of action, however, which resulted in the Fire Nation being divided in two, those that continued to follow the will of the Fire Lord and the other, smaller group, which became renegades in the eyes of the Fire Nation. Aware of this fact, the Earth and Water gladly took in these said renegades and have also started to prepare for battle with the Fire Nation. The Air Benders, on the other hand, have decided to stay neutral throughout this conflict, no doubt due to the influences of their teachings based around peace and non-hostility. Sadly, it soon became evident to the Fire Nation that taking out the Air Nation out of the picture would greatly help them expand their territory, as well as get rid of a potential enemy in the near future, so that will be their first target in this war. Not having been ready yet, the Earth and Water Nations both pull together resources to assemble a mercenary team, which will be responsible for defending the Eastern Air Temple, at least until reinforcements arrive from the Earth and Water Nations.

Agreed. So, shall we get this topic up and running? Or are there any more alterations/suggestions that anyone would wish to make?

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but I was sort of wondering at something. So you all have this idea for a pretty cool game, which is great and all. But who's going to run it?

I would vote DB. It's his topic, and he's probably the most experienced as far as running RPs go (god do I miss WoA sometimes...)
I'm not a huge fan of avatar, but I know the basics. So if DB or Nicsp (also a great RPer) open this up, I'd be in, and I think it'd run best that way.

Sure, I don't mind doing it if everyone is ok with it.

And yeah like Eye of the Liger said, is everyone ok with this story?
Or is there anything else people would like to discuss about it?

Cool, I'm working on the sign up sheet and post now.

Any ideas for a title?

Avatar: Renegades
Avatar: Mercenaries
Avatar: Conquest of Fire
Avatar: Defense of the Air Nomads
No Avatar

I can't really think of one that seems decent
