How did I learned to script
QUOTE
Hey pim! I'm the Law G14!

For the past couple of months I've been learning RGSS and I've got the basic stuff down such windows, variables, conditional statements, ect. But, I can't see myself making big scripts such as a jumping system or a side view battle system. I was wondering how you learned to script because I really want to know how to script really well.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

Well I don't make battle neither though I can still teach you some things :)...
The way I've learned to script is by reading other scripts for the most part.
I've allways been interested in other peoples work but this time I though I had to try to make something myself...and it worked!!
The most importand thing when you go scripting is (at least in my case) that you want to make something to help an other wich can't script.
You also need to feel the competition that's around in the scripting-community.
Cause, I have to say, if you get pushed to get a sertain request done before an other scripter does, you feel POWERFULL!! :P
So that's an other thing...
You also don't need to be afraid to learn from others or helpfiles.
When I write my scripts, I actualy always have the helpfiles open to look things up I don't know or remember.
Then, you must be calm, cause you need to try the script a lot of times.
When I write a script, I test it after almost every changes.
First I set up the major structure.
Like when I make a window-script or part of a script I start with something like this:
CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end
end
So that's also very important.
Then, the biggest thing I learned scripting from is TRIAL AND ERROR.
That's the most irritating way to learn something, cause it's more ERROR than TRIAL, but it does the trick realy good.

So that's it how I did it.
Now it's up to you.
Do some requests (if I didn't do it allready :P) and learn from them.

Hope that helped you out a little.
If not, keep your eye on the Scriptology-topic (see my sig) where I'll be updating for my scripting(video)tutorials.
Perhaps they're going to be usefull for you one day ;)

cool, that means this is for real!
I'm really looking forward to it
Oh, and scriptology sounds like the ancient art of scripting or the archeological brach dedicated to discover scripting, but either way it's great!!!

Scriptology link to gmail currently replaced with a link to (the discontinued) spores-adventure site,
because of certain website demands by the domain holder.
So, don't mind the content right now...

I'll see if I can create a temporary page in the afternoon (it's 11 AM over here, and I'm bound for school),
but until then, there's no need to follow the link to scriptology.co.nr; it's just a dummy page...

Also, the name was thought up by enix2, so I think we're gonna have to add a credits page...

EDIT: Ok, temporary page online... Ironically though, as soon as I uploaded the file, the server admins started checking my website for malicious content...
I'll report back as soon as this is fixed..

EDIT2: Ok, it's fixed now... took longer than expected.. Will contact Pim321 so he can update the link...

EDIT3: Ok, the new page is up and routed to...

Hey all...

And realy welcome to the post that tells all of you that Scriptology is being under construction.
I'm preparing myself to get it on the roll so that all of you and more are able to get some scripting knowledge.
I'm currently working on the main starting features such as the website and a logo.
Offcourse all tips are more that welcome so that I can concentrate on some other things that need to be take care off before I can realy start.

Anyway, thanks for the support so far.
I hope to meet you in one of my hopefully soon upcomming podcasttutorials.

Greatzz,
SojaBird.

Hey all,

This is another status update:

We're currently setting up the main website.. the server account has been all set up, and we're now making the content..
We're not going to give you the link just yet, because we want to present you with a pretty much finished website...

We're also still trying to figure out how to handle certain things on the website....

I will update this post with the progress..

19/01/08:
-Sojabird is working really hard on the website design; AmIMeYet will help out with the podcast page, when that will be developed..
-AmIMeYet pretty much finished the costum flv player (jay!), now just working out a color scheme to match the website..

Greetings,

AmIMeYet

PS: Wow, talking in the 3rd person is really weird..

Update -- Website

Website:
The website is now up, you can visit it at scriptology.co.nr.
No content yet though, but that will come in due time; we just wanted to show you the design.

Video Player:
I've also uploaded the custom video player made for this project, at this adress: amimeyet.890m.com/player.html.
Select the video source (the .xml playlist, or either of the videos (.flv), and press the create button for it to show up.
If you find any bugs, please either post them here or contact me personally.

We hereby hope to have informed you enough about the state the project is currently in.

All the best,

Sojabird (Pim321) and AmIMeYet

Like when I make a window-script or part of a script I start with something like this:
CODE
class Window_Name < Window_Base
def initialize(x,y,width,height)
super(x,y,width,height)
refresh
end

def refresh
self.contents.clear
draw_contents
end

def draw_contents
draw_something(with, some, parameters)
end

def update
refresh if @something != @what_it_should_be
end

Greatzz,

I checked out the home page and the video player and it's great to see that things are finally coming along nicely. I like the design and the video player works great. The hedgehog was very cute happy.gif . I'm very interested to see how this progresses.

Hahah thanks,

Well I'm looking forward to put some content on.
Though, it seems the site isn't working quite well with FireFox...so that's something to worry about.

Anyway,
Thanks.

Hope to see you soon.
Greatzz,

SojaBird.

Hey guys,

We're kinda in a dillema:

Sojabird and me both made a video player, but we can't decide what's the best! ohmy.gif
What do you guys like best?
Sojabirds:
http://scriptology.comoj.com/vid%20player/...o_playlist.html
Mine:
http://amimeyet.890m.com/player.html

Thanks,

AmIMeYet

Kernel.require("includable.rb") #replace includable.rb with the name of the file you want to load

class Game_Player < Game_Character
  def dash?
    return false if @move_route_forcing
    return false if in_vehicle?
    return true if Input.press?(Input::A) and $game_map.disable_dash?
  end
end

This snippet basically inverts the dashing.. allowing you to dash only when 'disable dashing' is checked.
This way, normal maps disable dashing, but the ones you set to disable actually allow dashing..

It should be placed where you normally place the scripts ('above main', in the materials section of the scripts window)..

How do you mean? What links?
The website link (scriptology.co.nr) works.. tough we haven't added any content yet (it only says top and down a few times)..
All links work for me..

But if you just mean te website.. yes, it is still under construction; not so much the design, but the conent

Your site's layout isn't that bad, but HTML cannot add, subtrackt, or do any math lol. try using PHP or Javascript for a more, better way of websiting. You might have to use either java or flash for your podcasts. though, youc ould possibly do it throgh windows media, but I havn't the slightest clue how lol. I'm really lookingg forward to this podcast. Nice job.

@kaley
Hey nice you like the player...though wich one you like the best?

@Genshyu
What do you meen HTML can't do any math??
For the podcasts, they're going to be flv's, wich are flash videofiles.
The player I made, uses flash and XML wich is very easy to use (add one line to the XML file and the video list in the player is updated automaticly smile.gif )

Anyway, thansk for the replies.

SojaBird.
