I must have missed the new post! O_O

The plant-alien-humanoid looks freaky-cool. =D
Curious as to what is on its back though. 0.o
Do plants need to breathe that way? Don't they breathe through their leaves? D=

The thing on its back keeps it warm as the concept was that these plant things were invading Earth and they landed in the North Pole. Nothing to do with breathing biggrin.gif

Ah, of course. Now it makes much better sense. XD

Could put a bunch of icicles hanging off of them, lol.
Light one of their limbs on fire for warmth. wink.gif

We had to bring a childhood toy from home and model and texture it. I chose this Todd Macfarlane dragon toy I had. The texture took a long time.

I'm pretty happy with the result, my original plan was to sculpt this in Mudbox but I ran out of time, so I just painted all of it and used the xNormals photoshop plugin to get a normal map out of it.

I have (as of the end of this week) just finished my first year of a Game Art course at TAFE (Which is like University except more practical). It is mostly 3D :3

What software did you use to make it?

I thought he said he made it in Mudbox. Or was going to? D=

Well, now that you've got yourself some formal education as a 3-D artist... you'd better start charging people for work! XD
(Oops, I didn't say that. ^^)

Mudbox is a separate program for sculpting (like Z-Brush) and yeah I was going to use it but I didn't have time because the deadline was today and I only finished it yesterday. biggrin.gif

And haha, I don't have time to do that. I'm not good enough yet I don't think.

What? I figured your recent tutorial request for Homu would have given you some inspiration for a female 3-D model. (...lmao...)

=D

At any rate, if you are capable of doing something that someone else is incapable of doing, then you can charge for it. Though it would generally be better to be good at it, however based on that modelling artwork I'd say you've got some decent skills at least. wink.gif
Not to mention that I bet you could make a pretty decent female model in that 3-D art software given the proper motivation. =]
(Of course, you wouldn't be able to post it here, but at least you'd know you could do it if you really wanted to, lol.)

Egad! What am I suggesting? ... Tonight has been... interesting... XD

Don't tell anyone but I just wanted to see Homu draw some naked girls.

I'm on holidays until February now, which gives me plenty of time to hone my skills. I'm pretty excited for next year.

Here's the diffuse maps for the dragon if anyone was interested~

My lips are sealed. XD

Oh cool, does that mean you'll be posting up some super-awesome graphics in February?!
Forcing us to wait in anticipation on the edges of our office chairs?!
XD

So how do you do measurements on textures like that? I mean, isn't it difficult to see how something fits without actually putting the texture on the 3-D model first?
(Me doesn't know much about how 3-D models and texturing works, lol...)

Naw I'll post stuff as I create it. tongue.gif

You have to project the faces of your model onto 2D plane called the UVs, which you then paint on top of (the white lines of the UVs are visible in those textures I posted). Think of it like unwrapping your model.

Then you can export those UVs out in pretty much any image format. The sizes used are 256x256, 512x512, 1024x1024 etc. For the dragon I used two 512x512 maps.

Also, in that art competition topic you've made, you mentioned that there would be a separate competition for 3D stuff. I'd be pretty interested in entering. Any idea when that was going to be made? I could help I guess, unless that meant I couldn't enter. tongue.gif

Ah ok, that makes a lot of sense. =]

You are one of the first to ask me about it, so I'm not sure that there is enough interest to do a full competition based solely on 3-D art (unfortunately at this point). Just like the Pixel-Art idea, I've only received "interest" responses from two people about that one.
If we get more interest, I'd definitely be hosting them and would love to see you enter. =]

So far the only people who have helped out (directly) in my competitions have been the judges (or past judges, in some cases have helped out), so it wouldn't be possible to help out and enter at the same time, since judging the competition is about the only thing you'd be helping out with.

However... if you helped out with getting more people to get involved and compete in a 3-D Art Competition, then you could still enter the competition because that would be helping in a way that wouldn't relate to who would win. =]

Yeah, hopefully more people around here are keen. I wouldn't be interested in judging it, but I meant like helping you figure out the specifications and restrictions of the competition. For example a limit on the polygon count is probably a good idea so people don't go insane.

Ah, you mean like that. Yeah, almost all of the entrants to competitions give their opinions and thoughts on what requirements/limitations should exist for the competition. At least up to this point it has been a bit of an experience, and fun as well, to allow that. =]

You're a vain bastard you say? Allow me to feed that vanity. All the drawing are top-notch. The worm reminds of a Graboid from the old Tremor movies.
Awesome stuff.

I'm impressed Ember, these are really nice.
Your unwrap is good and doesn't have much wasted space. smile.gif

But you're using Maya for modelling. sad.gif I'm a 3ds Max guy. tongue.gif
