Ipads, iphones, smart phones, game consoles and phone smarts tongue.gif have practically made the computer useless. They can surf the web, run and edit documents (like MS Office or one that they have on board already), look up maps, send things wireless to the printer, play high-end games that don't need discs and so much more that computers can do.

So does the majority of people (not counting ones who make games laugh.gif or design web sites, etc.) need computers? I predict that they will obsolete in two years time.

Not necessarily. Games like SC2 that are popular require large amounts of memory and a good video-card, which probably won't be able to fit into a little iPhone any time soon. Plus, computers will still be used by the government and military. I'm sure they will find more use in a computer than a little iPhone, seeing as the computer can hold a large monitor, more memory, etc. And as long as said games like SC2 are popular, then computers should stay in regular use.

It's true that they can do that, but a computer can still do it much better.

The convenience of such devices that you speak of really only applies to those who are constantly on the move, who would otherwise, not spend much time on the internet if it weren't for iphone or whatever the kids are using these days.
and technically, they are all computers.

I myself much prefer my PC for gaming over a console or a handheld device. My keyboard gives me a wide variety of different ways i can set my controls to. I guess you could say I love emulators.

I'm going to nit-pick about the word 'computer'.

All those things you mentioned are computers. A mobile phone is a computer.

A computer is a programmable machine that receives input, stores and manipulates data, and provides output in a useful format.

In otherwords, anything that 'computes' is a computer.

A calculator is a computer. Anything programmed to do a specific task is a computer. Eg cars, machinery etc.

So no, I can't see 'computers' becoming obsolete anytime soon lol.

Computers are going to be around for a long time before anything happens to them, bud. I mean, there is only so much a mobile phone can do that a computer can do better. But in 10 - 15 years, who knows what could happen!

I know all of the devices I listed are "computers", but I speak of home computers the majority of people use. They're not into PC gaming and mostly use the PC for the Internet. And PCs are getting dirt cheap nowadays as well.

If they ever do, indeed, get rid of PC's and stick with the mobile phone -- shit -- that means I will have no choice but to buy one of those things!

Nooo! Keep the PC alive. ^^

Im lucky enough to own a laptop, desktop PC and an Iphone 4 (for my birthday smile.gif). I can tell you now laptops and PC's are never going to be obsolete. Sure Iphones and Ipads and even smart phones are a close to a suitable replacement but one thing that really bothers me is that if I was typing this on my Iphone it would take me about 5 mins. Whereas where im typing this on my laptop its taken me about 2 minutes. Sure its a matter of a keyboard but its one advantage PC's and laptops have over Iwhatevers. Another advantage is both speed and memory.

Man it has been ages since I last came on this site xD. But with the recent (localized) release of RPG maker VX Ace (and thanks to a bit of money I recently came into possession of ^_^) how could I stay away?? :).
But its been a good 2 years since I updated my profile (seeing as my about me page said I was 15, when im now 17 years of age).
Well anyway glad to be back :). I probably wont be a commonly seen face (or... profile) but I hope to prolong my stay :). And yes my signature is the same as my about me page, mainly due to the fact that im lazy ;D.

Nothing's going to happen to the computer. Large scale corporations aren't going to exclusively use iPhones to do business, middle aged soccor moms aren't going to throw their PCs into the trash to check the weather, and college students aren't going to forsake PCs to do their research papers on Xbox's and play games on the iPad.

No offense, but this topic is simply a statement with no factual information or statistics to back it up.

I have nothing to contribute to this discussion save for telling you that they are ALL computers and that what you're referring to is either a microcomputer or personal terminal, depending on which term you prefer.

EDIT: Seems someone caught onto that already. I'll just say now that you'll be looking at the personal terminal for a while (they didn't make supercomputers obsolete, did they? Nope! They just made better supercomputers.)

In my opinion, I don't think that the computer is dying. If what you meant by computer is desktop computers, then it is possible that desktops are becoming outdated. From what I have seen, people nowadays use laptops more than desktops because laptops are simply more convenient .

Regarding smart phones and all of those fancy devices, I don't think those things are going to make personal computers obsolete . People use them to do different things. I use my phone to check emails/social network /weather/ etc. But i still use my laptop to write my research papers and do other things.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to offend anyone! I was just trying to stimulate minds of waht could possibly happen, not what will happen. Just a "what if", if you will. Again, sorry.
