DOWNLOAD DEMO(256 MB): MagnusLegendInstDemo.exe
Magnus Legend is a fantasy rpg game I am developing using RPG Maker XP similar to The Magnus Light another game I am developing. The game takes place in a fictional world known as Treter, however the storyline and concept is much different from the Magnus Light created with the VX engine. Magnus Legend is about a group referred to as the Magnick Warriors who oppose the dictator King Tharal who wants all those who have the ability to use magica, imprisoned and executed. His arguement for this cause is that he has a religious theory that humans are not supposed to possess such God like abilities and those who can use magica are actually demons. He says that this all came to him in a dream and because the King is seen as God's representative on earth according to Nuan beliefs, his soldiers willingly accept this theory and the civil conflict begins. The player takes the role of Stormwind Husa who is bent on getting revenge on the King due to his mothers death because of new laws that take away the freedom of Magnicks. One day Stormwind is unarmed and captured by the Nua Army then imprisoned in Natu Station. However he escapes, thanks to the Philosophical Alchemist named Artemus Shadowbreaker and joins his newly formed rebel group against the tyranny of the King.

RELIGIOUS WAR THEORY
The Game Theory
The game is also based on a theory I came up with about religion. Artemus, the hero of the story forges a group known as The Magnick Warriors. Some of the people of Nua see them as a doomsday cult but they are actually fighting for justice. At the start of the game, King Tharal explains to his Generals that the recent growth in Magnicks is due to the fact that they are possessed by demons. The Nuans worship Regaia, God of existence. Some of the religious doctrine explains how there would be a huge battle between good and evil. He uses religion as a way to round up the Magnicks for execution explaining how they are what is evil in the world. Although the religious theory noted is nothing to do with his hidden ambitions, this causes great conflict in the realm where many now fear anyone who can use magica. However some people still see their powers as a blessing. Hyperion Shadowbreaker, Artemus's brother and another important character in the game states his theory about what is happening in Nua. His theory is religious evolution and that magnicks have always existed. The Gods are what people worship, but he states that religion has changed through history and so have people. As people became more spiritual, more Magnicks came to be, thus religious evolution. However his views could be criticized by the Elves who dwell in the Casian regions, a race that has relied on magica years far before humans encountered them who worship Bahamut, the Dragon God of Peace.

The Real Theory
The real theory for the game is based on my own set of ideas about religion. I don't think people generally believe religion but more in the community of religion. This is why people enter religious institutions mainly for the community aspect and not the belief in God. When people believe in God, they don't enter the religious institutions to be part of the community but as individuals who serve and put their faith into their life for God. Sociologists like Troelsch explains different types of religions, Churches and Sects. Churches tend to be more mainstream, are more tolerant in accepting others views and don't expect people to change their lives for attendance or religious practices. They attract usually the middle class and above. However, Sects are split up religions from Churches who have argued against some of the religious doctrine. This is because they see the dis-privilege they have compared to the privileged. They are usually led by a charismatic leader who gathers up the oppressed and poor from working class background and below. Other sociologists like Stark and Bainbridge argue how Sects have a life cycle and they would eventually die out. However there have been established sects as noted by Wilson who argues that Coversionist Sects claim to want to convert a large amount of people which keeps the religion stable to possibly grow and Adventists Sects who wait the second coming of their religious leader.

The point I'm trying to explain is that religion changes over time. Sociologists I mostly agree with are Troelsch, Niebuhr, Wallis, Davie and Wilson's views. Wallis explains New Religious Movements in three ways; world affirming, world accommodating and world rejecting religions. Religion has changed over time because it has adapted to the changes that have occurred in society whether it is because these changes are economic factors, caused by war or through other movements that have little or nothing to do with religion such as the feminist movement in the 1960's. For example, Armstrong sees religion as being marginal to women because it is male dominated and these institutions inflict ideals and construct our behavior to think that women are inferior to men. Armstrong uses Orthodox Judaism and Catholicism as examples, where women aren't allowed to be priests. However in 1992, The Church of England a mainstream Christian religion now allows women to become priests. One of the key reasons this occurred was due to women fighting for equal rights so state policies have been changed. In our postmodern society many people don't attend religious institutions as much but many still claim they believe in God. For example in Reginald Bibby's Canadian survey, 25% of Canadians agreed they attended church regularly. However, a mainstream of 80% claimed they had religious beliefs. I believe that today, people don't attend religious institutions because it is no longer seen as a requirement and respectable to do so. This is because people have become more individualistic and society is less community based. Thus some people will always believe in religion but as society evolves and changes so will religion. Since the 1960's there has been a rapid growth in the number of sects and cults developing. There are over 800 New Religious Movements and over half a million followers for them. I argue that with the evolution of society, things have become so complex such as beliefs, thoughts and ideals. Thus religion has evolved and become more complex as well. Today many New Religious Movements are also combinations of many of the current mainstream religions. Another example to support this is the fact that there has been much debate in whether football today is a religion.
Personally, I would criticize my views due to the lack of primary research conducted to support it. My ideas have been adapted from previous theorists views and secondary sources which makes it lack the whole truth.

MAIN CONTINENTS
Main Continents of Treter...
Nua
The Nua Empire is a human realm that has the largest and most powerful army in the world. The continent was named by Magnus Sagitar who became a powerful warlord at one point in his life. Sagitar established trade routes between 5 countries and ran the Brooklyn Realms. He decided to combine the 5 countries, Brooklyn, Yama, Benvrais, Malu and Raynor into one continent so that it was easier to identify where the trades were going. Almost a century later, Magnus Jase, Sagitar's descendant and successor took over the whole Nua realm to bring peace to the nation forming allegiances to save their lands from vicious fiends. This makes Jase, the first true King of Nua given a magical sword by the Elves that would seal his title. However, Magnus Marimbo, Jase's son forfeit the title as King when he felt the Magnus family had grown weak physically. Today, the Nua nation is governed by Yomato Tharal who took over the throne when Kodius Tharal the lord that became King on Marimbo's absence mysteriously died. The most common job in Nua is a soldier or guard for males. This is because the government wants to keep it's countries safe from fiends and other enemies.

Shinda
This race mainly consists of humans and is the most technologically advanced race in the world. Years back during the age of fiends, Magnus Jase wanted to take over Nua to protect it from an uprising of fiends and monsters. Freud Sigmund a clan leader of his time argued against him. Instead of fighting Magnus in war, he decided to give up his territory in Yama. He felt that there was no point fighting if he had two enemies to face, Magnus and the fiends. Sigmund got on his ship and disappeared into the south alongside with many of his loyal followers and those who opposed and disagreed with Magnus's ambitions. They ended up in the cold lands of the world which wasn't filled with too many fiends at the time. It was here that Sigmund would name this territory Shinda. Being a genius, Sigmund was able to create high technological housing, water systems and use magica as energy to run the society. Thus, Shinda grew into a continent ran by energy from magica. Many years later, almost everyone in the population was trained into alchemists, those who have the ability to manipulate the earth and the wind. To secure his lands he made alliances with Dugal's son, Magnus Marimbo so he could set up trade paths for his people. Sigmund later died years after. Without no leader the government to had to elect a President who would be the people's choice. Favored by all, Menestril Thillis also referred to as Menethil became Shinda's new ruler.

Casia
Casia is the land of the elves who live on magica. They are peaceful race that love nature and live away from humans not valuing their lifestyle. The elves are a wise and honorable race. They are also immortal and can live forever unless they are killed otherwise. They are led by wise Emperor Linus. Linus once fought with Magnus Sagitar in a duel when a group of Nuan soldiers docked in Casia to discover the land. It was a battle of honor which occurred instead of countless men and fellow elves losing their lives. Linus had never met a warrior who could match his strength and before he knew it he was overpowered by Sagitar's Resoken. Defeated by Magnus, Linus befriended him and let him and his troops return home. Casia was now an explicit ally of Nua although hardly any trade routes were established between them. Recently a few elves have recently migrated to Shinda to start a new life and were welcomed by Thillis, it's President.

CHARACTERS
Quick Info
Husa Stormwind- He is the "bad ass" and main protagonist of the epic tale. The story is displayed from his point of view in the narrative. 19 year old cold and brutal Stormwind is a fearless warrior originally set on a path for revenge but gets reluctantly dragged into a battle that will determine the fate of existence itself. This is because his mother was killed by soldiers who were after magnicks. Husa can use wind magica but tends to rely more on his brute strength rather than his magica powers. When he is captured by several soldiers due to being unarmed in combat, Husa's fate collides with Artemus Shadowbreaker whom he begins to respect. Artemus asks Husa for his strength to join him against the tyranny of the dictator King Tharal.

Riz- His real name is Richard Izlington. The 18 year old is a cocky and trouble making individual. Young Richard is a prime example of your typical Robin Hood. He's a proud thief who steals money from the greedy and donates some to the poor. Not very serious about most things, Riz does however care for justice and is a useful ally for Artemus's ambitions. He's quick with a dagger and can manipulate the earth with his magica. Unfortunately Riz is arrested at the start of the game by the Nua Soldiers because he tries to stop a riot from occurring when the soldiers want to take away any Magnicks they can.

Sasha Yoland- Sasha was a cook for some of the wealthiest nobles in Nua. She has a large temper and is easily annoyed. She earned quite a living cooking food until the new law against Magnicks was set. Being a druid, she can also turn into a half human cat form which she tends to only use as a last resort to protect herself. She too was captured by soldiers but this occurred whilst she was asleep. Like Husa, she can use wind magica but also has the ability to use minor healing and can use magica that drains away her opponents life force. Sasha is the most dangerous when in her Cat Form. As the plot progresses, she begins to fall for Artemus, the leader of the Magnick Warriors.

Artemus Shadowbreaker- Once a soldier of Nua, Artemus left the military and departed to Shinda, the most technologically advanced region of the world. Shinda educated and trained Magnick's into Alchemists, experts at using magica. Now Artemus has full control of his magica and upon hearing about the new law on his return decides it's time to use his powers for something useful. As a philosopher, Shadowbreaker predicted the outcome of what would occur if there was civil conflict within Nua. He knew it could lead to a demi war. He felt that only way he could bring peace to Nua and prevent catastrophe is by returning the rightful King to the Throne, Bo Liam Magnus III. He uses his pistol to fire magica shots at his foes.

King Tharal- Yomato Tharal is the dictator King of Nua and main antagonist of the plot. His father Kodius Tharal took over the throne when the rightful King Marimbo Magnus II forfeit the title. When Kodius suspiciously disappeared, his first son Dugal didn’t want the throne so Yamato became Nua’s new ruler. At the beginning of The Magnus Legend, Yomato explains his religious war theory that the Nua Empire will fall due to the rising of a doomsday cult. This would occur unless they were stopped. He explains that the magnicks are what is evil in the world because they possess the ability to use magica. His argument is that humans are not supposed to possess such power as it only belongs to the God’s. He explains it all came to him in a dream and his soldiers accept his view due to the fact that the King is seen as God’s representative on earth according to Nuan beliefs and laws. This causes much conflict throughout Nua leaving a few minors to flee into the Shinda continent. However, secretly Yomato Tharal has hidden ambitions and is using this deceit to the people for his own gains.

Hyperion Shadowbreaker- The slightly younger brother of Artemus, at only 19 brave Hyperion is one of Nua’s Generals and the King’s personal Knight. However, believing the King had gone mad Hyperion comes up with his own religious theory about what is happening in Nua, religious evolution. King Tharal orders a hit on his once loyal soldier and Hyperion is killed by 2 skilled swordsmen. Fortunately for him, Hyperion is brought back from the dead by the Seraph, Gods of the skies, some who refer to them as angels. With a second chance at life and now blessed with the powers of holy magica, Hyperion becomes a Paladin. He seeks out his brother when he hears about a group known as the Magnick Warriors to help aid him and defeat the dictator King. His army still awaits his return at Nua’s centre which will prove incredibly useful to the cause.

Vellesca Unis- Hyperion’s girlfriend and a magica caster. She’s a peaceful young and pretty 17year old girl who tends to take a backseat in groups. Hyperion met Vellesca when he was injured whilst protecting Malu City from a powerful fiend, the Ogre. She healed his wounds and they continued to keep frequent contact. She is exceptionally gifted in using healing magica so Hyperion fears her safety when Tharal orders the capture and execution of all magnicks. He attempts to get her away from Malu City before the conflict begins. Luckily enough he succeeds but is killed in the process.

Bengaiden Sigmund- One of the 4 elite warriors of Nua, Bengaiden remains an undefeated swordsman. He is feared throughout Nua for his dominance over his foes and superior skills. He is also the Admiral of Hyperion’s army remaining loyal to him after his disappearance. Bengaiden possesses the ability to use the Shiftzenken, a powerful sword skill that exceeds natural speed. Although he can’t use magica, he makes it up for his high intellect to see through the essence of magica. He is the one responsible for killing Husa’s mother under the King’s orders. However, Bengaiden sees the wrongness in his actions and that a true warrior would never harm the defenceless so he is spared by Husa who had the upper edge in combat during their battle being assisted by the would be Magnick Warrior group upon their escape from Natu Prison. Eventually Bengaiden would play an important role in the rise against the tyranny of Yomato Tharal.

Hemphia- Hemphia is blind and a follower to Artemus, also seeming to be his best friend. When Artemus trained to become an Alchemist, it was in Shinda he befriended her. Although she cannot see, she is highly dangerous and can manipulate elements such as fire at the tip of her fingers making her the most dangerous Alchemist alive. She uses her mental powers to sense the terrain around her so her spiritual senses become like her new eyes. She’s kind of slow thinking but can understand difficult concepts easily. Although Hemphia has no idea what the group are fighting for, she as a member of the Magnick Warriors will assist Artemus to the end.

Moriaty Lightheart- 19 year old Moriaty is a summoner that dreamt the end of the world. She predicts that a demi war would occur because of the civil conflict developing in Nua. This means all-out war between all nations of Treter so civil conflict was just the start. Pure as the wind, Moriaty with her staff sets off to prevent this outcome but knows that to do so she will require powers granted by the Gods. She seeks out Nemphis, a dark and powerful immortal being that once granted power to Moriaty’s grandmother back in her era. Nemphis agrees to assist the Lightheart once again. She eventually bumps into the Magnick Warriors who also have similar ambitions. Lending them her powers will prove useful in the battle against Tharal. As the plot progresses, she begins to have a soft spot for Stormwind Husa because of the darkness in his heart trying to show him the light.

Yakume Strider- Strider Yakume is an elf bandit of the Casian lands. He and his father were exiled from Casia due to both of them stealing gold from one of the nobles many years back. Even so, they continued their deviant ways as thieves wanted by the elders of the Casian order. Unfortunately Strider was left alone when his father past away from an illness which he could not receive treatment for. He later noticed that he inherited his fathers unknown disease and decided to live a life of incredible risk. Thus, upon the Magnick Warriors arrival in Casia, he steals all of their gold which was supposed to fund their preparation for the conflict with Tharal. The lonely bandit is however defeated by them later and prompted to join the group by Artemus. Strider accepts and his skills prove useful to the cause.

You've made quite a lot of work...
Impressive graphics (good character design, these anime-like characters are perfect! Have you hired a spriter or they were made by you?)
Story background seems rather well built.
These themes are rather mature, game design is actually excellent, story&setting are good...

If I can argue with one thing... mapping is the only thing you should modify, in my opinion (e.g. why a portrait in a cell? and why such large table? Prisoners should be treated in a worse way, I suppose...)

Well, good luck, then smile.gif
Keep on this way.

Jens

@jens of zanicuud said it , for prison dont make it luxury for the prisoner , too much space wasted mainly " inside the cell" , the bed in the cell is too luxurius , dirty it or better dont give them bed at all XD.
2x3 space is enough fit for a prison cell.
portrait? yeah its weird...
giving prisoner table (let alone big) is like containing prisoner whos a noble / rich guy, but seriously that table is too big, you could have a banquet party there.
the dirt/ground in front of cell looked weird, why not use different floor to differentiate inside the cell and outside cell ?
might be better add some lighting (darken the area) to make it look like prison.
i have no idea what place the 2nd map is ,... is it stock/supply room?.....with bed?
in the 5th map theres a bridge (of some kind) why not use that for the bridge in the 4th map?
in the 1st map theres a table for guard that direction is to the wall.....might be better if its someplace else like 4-5 spaces below , so the guard can watch anyone who enter and leave , and not leaving his behind unguarded.

The Credits have been updated. I finally finished the demo release so I found as many as I could of the authors, scripters, spriters and musicians that contributed to the game. If you notice any that weren't put there then please feel free to PM me. Ok, now I should add credits to other sites. Demo should be released later today. (This game is part of my extended project at college.)

I would love to receive any feedback from you guys about what you thought of the sociological messages. It would be very helpful.

This looks great biggrin.gif. I haven't seen any RPGXP games lately (except Seal of Seasons). People use RPGVX and VXAce a lot...

Hmm... Do I really need to make an account to sign in and download the game?

Anyway, I will try to download and give a honest feedback to you later!

Wow, thanks Milonar, it's because the website can store higher than 100MB which media-fire doesn't support. And the installation routine is larger than 250MB. If not, you can always download it from: RPG Maker Network.(DOWNLOAD)

Well, I haven't finished the whole Demo yet. I'm still in the Sewer, but I have something to tell happy.gif .

+Just like Jens of Zanicuud and supercow said above, you should make the prisons smaller and dirty (Example: the bed). You may try to make the prison area darker to bring out the atmosphere.

+I notice that you usualy end up the sentence with "...", you don't use "!" or "?" much... I suggest you to work more about Dialogs to make the events more exciting. Example: The soldier says he has an order will attack you immediately. If he says "Prepare yourself...", it's not suitable with the situation, right? We can easily fix to "Prepare yourself!", it's much better. Because you use too many "...", I feel character's Dialogs doesn't have any energy and they don't have their own characteristics. I'm sorry if I'm strict about this part >.<.

+The movement of the characters is also important. If they rush to attack you, you should increase their speed. The opening where Husa kills two soldiers is an example. By increasing soildier's speed towards the players, we can feel they want to kill him. That's why Husa has to fight back first. If you need more specific information to change, I will play the Demo again to point it out.

+The story in the Demo is fine... for now. Hmm... I guess Husa let the soldiers caught him because he wants to meet a blonde hair general, right?(Sorry, I forgot his name). There are still some plots I want to ask, but I will play the game again to be sure.

+The map of the sewer looks familiar/smiliar or I feel... the same as the sewer map in Project Viral. Hmm... I have a little trouble with the monster down there. I can kill them, but there are not enough supplies for me to do it. I run out of potions in the third sewer area with my party nearly knock out and one monster group still in the way near the exit. It's hard to escape, if you ask me.

I think that's all for now. If you need to know anything, just ask me. And if I have something else to point out, I will tell you happy.gif . This Project is also great, don't stop doing it.

Believe me it's possible to get out of the Sewers, you're meant to save up your potions. Probably a good idea to backtrack into Natu Station and try and find any more potions. I've tested this many times. The difficulty level is quite challenging throughout the entire game. It's not one of those game where enemies deal like puny damage towards you. You have to think about future battles as well as the current battle. Rationing is very important in this game. However, you're right maybe the difficulty could be too hard at the start so I might possibly revamp it and add more potions at the start for the full release.

(Also, most of the Sewers are actually taken from Morbid Awakening, the more darker version of this game following a more sinister plot but set in the same fictional world. So basically, Project Viral actually stole the Sewer Maps from this game and Morbid Awakening.)

I also wanted to say thanks a lot for playing the game. It means a lot!

Stuck in the sewers, how do the switch's work?

Did I miss some hint or are you really telling players to figure it out themselves?

Current Impressions -

(Until I can get an answer of some sort for the sewer aspect of the game: I'm going to stop playing all-together and comment on a few things so far.)

Side-Note - I've noticed that most of the game demo's I've played thus far have emphasized difficulty a lot and so far only 1 game has pulled it off well (imo): Legionwood 2. I have no idea why these games have such steep learning curves, nor do I feel they offer anything of value when it's either improperly implemented or possibly form impasses for the player later on. That being said; I'm not insinuating that you've gone awry with how difficulty has been scaled, I just wanted to mention that this concept seems to be a general focus and more important than it should be.

Pro's:

- Great visuals and cut-scenes, that much can't be denied; the menu's look great and this is even in full-screen to boot, so I must say, you did a fantastic job with the presentation overall.

- Story is fluid and the characters have proper dialogues that portray who they are and what they're fighting for.

- Loved the concept of looting corpses.

Con's:

- I'm an avid fan of "steal" in any RPG, but the way it works here seems lack-luster. I spent half an hour spamming it the sewer mobs, until I got a mana healing item off of one of the Basilisks. I know that the ability is free to spam, but the rates are still really, really, REALLY, low, and that makes me a sad panda =(.

- Difficulty, difficulty, difficulty:

A. Enemies and bosses alike deal a good amount of damage, and are fast enough to slight you even 2 turns before 3 members of your party are capable of acting.

B. You and your party begin at fairly low levels and even by level 7-8: there's very little you can do to either decrease the damage taken per encounter or speed up your allies action bar. (Yes, there are spells that decrease physical/magic damage, but I'll explain why those aren't viable in part C).

C. Spells cost far too much mana; heal an ally for 80?! Barrier and Resist at 50 per?! You have 4 party members, each are squishy. Are you really going to invest in defense for every encounter? No, you don't get enough mana supplies to afford it and most of the mana you do have is expended on those ghost mobs.

D. Supplies are too scarce compared to the amount of encounters you're forced to engage. I realized you wanted to make this challenging and reinforce to the player that he/she should consider each encounter and future encounters carefully, but this reinforcement is skewed when you don't give the proper amount of supplies and the player is taking far too much punishment. Especially right from the get-go, where everyone is bare of many skills as well as proper equipment, which is fairly non-existent in the demo, so most likely you'll get players who have very low vitality ratings across the board half-way or so in the sewers and near death by the time they clear out the room with the 4 switch's.

E. Over-drives are crutch's at this moment; they're capable of one-shotting everything and build very quickly when low on health. I ended up saving before each encounter after I ran out of heals and just kept reloading until the mobs targetted something with enough life to tank, while everyone else had to just act 2-3 times to fully max out a gauge.

- Riz becomes useless once he runs out of mana versus the shadow mobs or encounters in general within the sewers. But atleast he can poison and frustrate anything that isn't an apparition, right?

- The 1 vs 1 boss fight took me by surprise, and there wasn't even a dialogue of some sort to fore-shadow it; I suppose that's the down-side to being able to save at any time. I had already used "his" over-drive gauge by then, and ended up having to not only use up the High Potion, but also get off 2 stunning feints, and 4 lucky dodges to build up enough meter. Might I suggest incorporating atleast 1 item that immediately fills the OD meter, just for that particular encounter?

Suggestions -

- I noticed that potions healed 200, but high potions recovered 1000. Maybe you could find a better balance by having potions at 500. You could even further regulate how often they drop by doing this and it would also make supplies very valuable, rather than under-whelming and scarce.

- Riz's haste did next to nothing to enhance any of his allies turn speeds, unless it's meant for something else? If not, then shouldn't it give someone atleast 1/4th of Riz's speed or just scale better in general to be worth the 50 cost in mana?

- Sasha is too heavily focused on "self"-heals. The only other heal she gains that can be used on anyone else costs 80 mana per use. Her mana at level 7-8 is around 484. Now you may not want players to abuse her heal ability, but how much hp does it really recover, and with mana supplies being even rarer than health; I don't see any reason for the spell to require that much mana, when by the time I would even consider using it is if I was left with little to no options.

That's about it. Good luck with the game and its future progression!
