Story
Eons ago, the world and all of its splendours were created by the magnificent and all-powerful being simply known as the "Creator." It wove the threads of life, and upon creating the planet of Tsufanubra, spotted it with its most cherished life-form: man.

Having gifted mankind with all of its blessing and necessities, the Creator simply watched as man forged his own path in life, and over the decades crafted himself in to a race of truly wondrous individuals numbering in the millions.

The Creator, however, grew tired of this creation, and thus gave life to three heavenly Kings to watch over and monitor the world in his stead. Overseeing their lord's creation from on-high, the Three Kings of Tsufanubra guided their people into an age of peace and prosperity for countless years to follow...

Then that fated day came—the day wherein a great darkness spilled from the opposite world of Arbunafust, and threatened to dominate Tsufanubra and all who lived upon it. The efforts of this otherworldly force, however, were thwarted by the Three Kings. They gifted mankind with four divine relics, then simply waited for man to take back what had been stolen from them.

With the aid of their overseers, man was able to forcibly remove the invading force, and cast it back to whence it came.

Their purpose completed, the relics bore themselves into the earth, forever shedding their light in silence so that mankind could attain eternal peace.

Characters
Celes
Central protagonist of Dragon Fantasy. Celes was born in the rural village of Yur, within the Eastern kingdom of Yurudos. Since birth, she has displayed the mark of the “savior,” an individual chosen by the Three Kings of Tsufanubra to lead their people into a new age.

Sando
A well-known, high-raking solider within Castle Yurudos. He is also Princess Lifa's personal attendant and very close friend. He's been by her side since they were children, and has devoted his life to her and the royal family for taking him in and raising him as one of their own.

Yoor
A cleric hailing from the Western kingdom of Borez. Devoting his life to the art of healing at a young age, Yoor has accumulated vast amounts of magical experience through the years, and because of this has come to be well-respected within Borez.

Lifa
The princess of Yurudos, and close friend to Sando. She lost her mother at a young age, but those who knew her mother and now know her say they're next to identical, right down to her tendency to talk non-stop!

Approved and moved. I'm currently playing through the original version right now myself, so it will be fun to compare the two when I'm done.

Awesome! You'll have to get back to me and let me know of your thoughts on both versions when you get the time! But since this is the topic for the remake, it'd be preferred if you were to talk about that one. Lol. The demo reaches up until the point of Vlad's defeat and you get Lifa (your magician).

Awesome job, this. While it's certainly more detailed than the original, I don't think it would be fair to compare the two, as they both attempt different styles. What's impressive, though, is how you managed to capture the essence of the original game, while also greatly enhancing the story, and still keep the original flow.

Story-wise, it's a bit cliche, but considering that this attempts to mimic the style of early SNES games, it can be forgiven. And in spite of the cliches, there's also some interesting twists as well. Our hero is really a heroine, and while it's standard for our heroes to go off and save the world, it's refreshing to play the lead of a female character. The mapping is done very well (of which I suppose we have Corfaisus to thank), and the visuals and audio (even if familiar) work well here.

What would our heroine be if she didn't recognize it?

And of course, there's the return of some of our favorite cast members as well.

Overall, it's a decent remake worthy of the Dragon Fantasy name, and there's very few things to pick on at this point. The first is when you first return to your village after playing through the trial cave. You stay the night at your home, but your health does not heal. It's a minor thing, but does stand out when the typical form of healing is rest.

And finally, I must find fault with the odd name of the world we are exploring, which doesn't flow off the tongue very well.

Perhaps a revised name like Tsufana would work better.

Here's to hoping for the rest of this game in short time. Good luck with the rest of your project.

Glad to see that it passed the test!

Yeah, I was hoping that I'd be able to pull off keeping the "essence" of the original game. That's why I wanted to change things up a bit, but not TOO much that it would seem like a totally different game altogether. An example being unable to enter homes that aren't a Weaponry/Armoury, or an Inn. I thought that I'd keep those aspects in there just to pay homage to the original.

I've always wanted to write a female protagonist. I don't know why, but female protagonists and antagonists alike interest me greatly. And no, it's not for the reasons you probably immediately think of. Haha. I think it's mainly because in most games/anime/manga, females are generally portrayed as being overall weaker than a majority of the male cast. In most of my works, however, this is usually the opposite. If you've played ANY of my other Dragon Fantasy games you know the fate of our heroine. This was revised as an "origins" title to explain how things got to be the way they were in the later entries. And although this is the case, I'm making every other DF game non-canon once this remake is completed. Redundant? Probably, but I have finally laid out in my head where I want to take the series.

Hmm, I was going to comment on how interesting the font was, but then I checked amerk's post and realized there may be something wrong on my end.

http://s426.photobucket.com/albums/pp341/X...current=RE1.jpg

^ It gets even worse when reading the dialogue box's as they sometimes assimilate 2 letters into one and some words don't even look like what they should be: an "a" looks like a boxed in "g".

Any reason why this is happening; could it be because of my resolution?

I'm fairly sure it has to do with RPG Maker 2000. I've included everything a person needs to play the game in the download (RTP, etc.) but evidently the font just does not want to work for a lot of people. That's a common problem though, and an easily remedied one at that.

Go to the DFR Game Page in the download link listed in the main post, and go to the "Downloads" tab. Download "Patch 1.0" and install the font that comes with it. It's in a folder called "Install this Font." Haha. That should fix things.

Much better, thanks. I'm greatly reminded of Demon Legacy when playing this.

I did have some other questions though:

How difficult was the first boss supposed to be? I ended up using about 3-6 healing herbs before downing him.

Celes's in-menu portrait surprised me a bit, are you going to change the color later?

Excellent!

And the portraits present in the demo are only temporary. In the version I'm currently working on, I've already gotten some new portraits made for me by Dyhalto of RMN. He edited some Fire Emblem portraits and crafted them to fit my characters! So woot.

And the first boss should be challenged at Lv.2~, and you will need to use a decent amount of Healing Herbs to get through it. 3-4 sounds about right. It's to show people that YOU MUST UTILIZE THE "DEFEND" OPTION, and that enemy (and especially not boss) encounters will not boil down to hit-spacebar-until-you-win.

Hmm...there's a defend option?! /sarcasm

Honestly, though; I thought I'd be taking way too much damage anyway to consider using a turn to defend, while juggling potion chuggin and planning attacks. Might be very useful later though.

Good luck and have fun with the remake!

I have to ask, what good is the defend option if you are fighting solo? Sure it would slow down the pain some, but it doesn't put you ahead any, either, unless defending heals a bit your wounds. One exception may be if you know beforehand when the enemy will use a certain attack, and defending yourself will lessen the blow. Other than that, I just fought to level 3 and just followed a sort of attack/heal method.

Well with this fight in particular (the first boss battle, that is), he will quickly lay down a pattern where he'll do an attack, charge, and then release his charged ability before starting the cycle over. Defending on the turn before he release this charged attack is the key to winning.

Other bosses in the future may always do a specific attack on their first turn, or perhaps cast a certain spell on a specific turn (every 5th, etc.)

With the way RM2K works, you don't need to see the "Celes (or whoever) has defended!" message to gain the additional defense the command gives you. It'll kick in as soon as the battle phase begins.

If un-defended, I think the charge attack the boss has does 13+ DMG. If defended against, it'll be reduced to 2~.

I figured it had to have something like that, but I couldn't remember. In cases like that, using the Defend would make sense.
