Well last week I was sitting in science class and we had a sub (I like this sub, because she likes to get off track yet manages to teach us) anyhow, she was saying something about abstract art (she sidetracked, it's science class) and said I quote "How can a bunch of blots of ink be art? Its stupid" and I raised my hand and said "No offense, but you must not understand art, art isn't about what people think, In my opinion it's about feeling, and what it means to you, not some pseudo (I mean stupid art, art constructed or painted to sell, not inspire or whatever) piece of art, and she just said "well it's what I think"
and another occurrence, (last year) in american goverment I was screwing around after I did my work and busted open a ink pen, some ink dripped on my notebook and I was like *LIIIGHTBUUUULB* and I held the ink thingy on the paper to make a puddle of ink and then took the pen itself and dragged small, thin lines and it turned out really awesome looking, my friend said "dude...you have problems" I was like...The hell?
and yeah, about 30 mins ago I made another one of my "ink paintings" and I'm terrible at drawing

But enough about me...
What do you think defines creativity?

Defining creativity is one thing, but this sounds like a discussion about the philosophy of art.

I'm of the opinion that anything designed to be aesthetically appealing, is art. Even if it is inappropriate or doesn't agree with any "popular trends".
That leaves the definition wide open, however you need to leave such a broad interpretation when dealing with art.

Professional art is somewhat different though. It is created for many reasons, and sometimes is made simply for the sake of selling it. Regardless of this fact, if anyone can accept it as something that is aesthetically appealing then it is art.

Art can be distorted or refined, it can be emotional or political.

I've studied loads of art, and have even accepted into my definition forms of art that are quite grotesque in the opinions of most people (including a Russian artist who uses the remains of deceased animals as pieces of art sculptures that she makes).

There is no limit to art. =]

Creativity is like art, and so the same definition can be applied to it in most cases.

creativity is like productivity.
While productivity is the effectiveness of what is being produced
Creativity is the effectiveness of what is being created.

Creation being the ultimate art form basically leaves us with creativity just being the effect to which we create.
Whenever anything is created, there is some form of creativity. When there is something created that it inspire new creations, that is when it is creative, because it is effective at creating new ideas beyond itself.

Well that's my definition anyway.

It's my opinion that creation is the ONLY art form. If something is created, it is art in at least some sense. I'm not talking about something that is reproduced (think factories,) but rather bringing into existence something new. When it comes to paintings or sculptures, this is typically achieved by the emotions conveyed rather than the physical properties of the piece (paint, marble, etc.)

For the most part I agree with you, Sparrowsmith. If anyone can think of art which does not involve creation, I'd like to hear it.

As far as modern art goes, I find it mostly reprehensible. I typically judge art by the amount of brain activity it inspires in me, and modern art doesn't really cause much more than a flicker. Usually. Sometimes there will be a profound piece of modern art that I can appreciate, but usually not.

Classical art though... I can't get enough smile.gif

I know, right? That art is genius!! I mean, how do you plan two images simultaneously in your mind as you're crafting the piece. But he was a weirdo..

I define creativity as cleverness and skill found in whatever medium you're trying to expresss yourself in, be it movies, paintings, comedy, etc. But my definition for art is a lot more like X-M-O's.
