So, to skip to the main point, something came up that made me have to re-install RMXP. Well, when it finished installing, I got the infamous "Failed to obtain a trial serial number from N Titles server." no problem I thought, this has happened before when I've re-installed, I just set the compatibility to windows XP, and run in admin mode. Well, that didn't fix it.

here's what I have:

Windows vista Ultimate (urgh)
RPG Maker XP (still have installation package)
RPG Maker XP serial key (I spent $60+ on this, and am not about to give up on it.)
Uniblue RegistryBooster2

And here's the methods I've tried already:

Compatibility/admin mode
Re-installing/restarting (even to a different directory)
Taking ownership of RPGXP.exe and PSIKey.dll (also setting full control, and taking ownership of the Enterbrain folder, and restarting after doing so to both.)
RMXP registry keys (the keys that fake XP into thinking your trial is up so that you have to activate; also tried restarting after.)
Cleaning up the registry (one'd think that after fixing 407 errors that the problem would disappear..)

(I've tried all of these with/without internet connection, and with firewall on/off. Restarting frequently)
No my version isn't pirated (I downloaded it from one of the RMXP site's mirrors, download.net I think.), no it's not illegal, yes I bought it, yes I used my own money, yes I still have my serial key from when I bought it.

So if anyone knows of a way to fix this problem without doing what I've done (or by doing it differently), could you tell me how?

Here is exact what you should do, step-by-step.
http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/22121/t111...s-server-error/
I don't got Vista myself but it worked for my friends.

Are you having problems with some steps or it just won't work?

Thhen the only thing I can think of then is to reinstall RMXP and try to follow those steps one more time.

Should be able to fix it simply by running rmxp as administrator, shouldnt even need to run it in a different compatibility mode.

Do you have any firewalls or anything running?

Only norton (which comes with a firewall), but when trying to get it to work, I turned off my firewall.

I must have just been lucky to not have any problems using Vista and XP.
I did a little search and found this:
http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/22121/t111...s-server-error/
Not sure how effective it'll be and some replies have other solutions.

I wonder if it does have anything to do with Norton even being on there, I had a horrible time with it. Even simple checks on updates it wasn't letting connect. If you can try completely shutting it down, not just the firewall, then see how things go.

Anyway I hope this helps you get sorted.

I have discovered that Norton even when disabled can affect programmes.

When I had my new laptop I coundnt get Aol "shudder" to work or get on the internet.

I ripped the whole thing out of my system, replaced it with a better virus checker and everything worked fine- you have nothing to lose???

I've tried my old one, downloading the new one, and I've even tried using the patch. (but the patch is already covered in the new setup, so my doing so was kinda redundant.)

You could try the registry edit

http://topic-central.blogspot.com/2009/12/...tain-trial.html

Follow the instructions. It worked for me.
