I'm curious why everyone gets so upset about games that either include or don't include the RTP. Some people get upset because it makes the file size too huge if it's included. Others get upset if it's not included and they don't own that particular game engine. So I thought, why doesn't everyone just make a habit of downloading and installing the rtp for at least VX and XP? They are relatively small files and once downloaded you'd never have to worry again whether or not the rtp is included. Not to mention they are completely free. I am providing links for downloading both here directly from Enterbrain's site. It may also be helpful to direct all people who complain that they don't have it to this thread so they can also download these. Please pass on the info.

I already include a link to the RTP of the engine I'm using in my own game thread. Which I think is actually better than re-directing people to this thread which will re-re-direct to the official link page.

Fair enough. Though not everyone looks at your game thread. The idea of this post it to help the community as a whole find the resources they need to play the games they make. While you may provide a link to the rtp in your game thread, others do not. And others don't even mention whether or not you need it. The gamer who wants to play our communities games shouldn't be the ones punished because of the game creators error or because they simply have a lack of knowledge.

I thought you could manually include all necessary graphics in the game itself, without anything that is not used.

Especially if you do not make heavy use of the RTP it makes sense (the developer should just suss out the size of content used from the RTP and see if it is worth it to include it).

I don't see why enterbrain would care, anyone can get the whole RTP anyway (I don't know if this is the case, I am just saying).

If you ever want people outside the RM* community to play your game, then you better well develop your game with the fact that most players won't have the RTP in mind...and most players won't want to have to download something else to play your game. In all likelihood, they probably just won't bother. Make your game RTP-independent; import all assets that your game uses and don't make your players download the weighty RTP.

Like with what Sailerius said, I have a lot of friends outside the RM community who do not have RPG Maker to run my games, so I generally just add everything I need into one EXE so they do not need anything to run the game. I think it's a good thing to include the RTP especially for people who do not use VX, XP, 2k3, 2k, etc., anyways. It's just a good thing to have. I'm not mad if I need the RTP, but you can imagine that 85% of everyone will be a bit bummed out if your game does not run and they have to search for the required files to run your game; at that case, everyone will just shut your game off for good.

Well, I'm glad to see this thread is still semi-alive for me to make a counter remark.

livpj11, I am aware not everyone visits my game thread. But, what I was suggesting is that people should do like I have, and link to the official Enterbrain site. I mean, if they're going to link to this thread which will just link to Enterbrain, why bother sending users through all sorts of hula-hoops? That's an easy way to piss people off before they even get to play your game.

Now, as for Sail and Brent...

For those of us who do use the RTP, it becomes really tedious to include the RTP every time we make a game. Why is that? Because, first of all, it does take up a nice chunk of space. Secondly, the other RPGMaker users already have the RTP. But thirdly, if everyone keeps including the big RTP in their game file just so non-RPGMaker players can play it, and then these non-RPGMaker players keep downloading all these games with RTP included... hot damn! Those folks have several games which all have the same files which take up the same amount of space.

It's smarter to just provide the link to the RTP and exclude the bases from the game. This way the players need to download the RTP only once, install it, and then they can be on their merry way of playing any RPGMaker VX game. That way they don't keep wasting bandwidth downloading the same crap over and over (and the uploaders don't waste bandwidth uploading that crap).

Furthermore, what about the RTP stuff you're NOT using? You're making people download stuff that's not even being used IN YOUR GAME. Well, you could try to root out what you're not using, but what if you make a mistake and accidentally remove something that you ARE using? Well, if you're not using Woratona's anti-crash script, you game will crash.

And that's exactly why you provide them the link to the RTP; so that way they don't have to "search for the required files."

Just look at my game thread for example. "Here's the link to my game. If you don't already have it installed, install this extra stuff. Oh, and by the way, you'll be able to play ANY RPGMaker VX game with this second file." The individual RTP file is just a good thing to have for everyone involved.

I just use this method.

1. Make a game with RTP off.

2. Make a game with RTP on.

3. Use the game with RTP on to export the resources you need to the one with RTP off. This way, you'll only have to import what you need, and no weighty downloads alongside your game. This also inspires you to use less RTP, which is a good thing.

Or...you could NOT use the RTP and make EVERYBODY happy! ^^

But then again, some of the greatest games in RM need the RTP. Hmmmm...
