Thought it would be fun and help stimulate ideas if people share ideas they had on fantasy races and cultures.

This could be a template for those who wish to use it.

Name of people:
Physical appearances:
Environment they live in:
Religion:
Additional info:

Thought I'd get the ball rolling with two races I have in my game ( that seems like I will never finish lol )

Name: wartscale clan goblins

Appearances: typical red and green goblins with ugly facial features and short in size. Wield small blades and axes and are know for their fearless battle charge into battles.

Environment: mountainous regions of Rath

Religion: they worship dragons

Additional info: their leader is Granny Wartscale, a very old but lively goblin woman who founded the clan. She raised a dragon from birth which believes her to be it's mother. The dragon is a type known as a broodmother which is born pregnant and gives birth to many offspring through out it's life. These offspring too are very protective of granny wartscale and have turned this tribe of goblins into a deadly force.

Name: The Shivan

Appearances: could pass off as human in a crowd. They have bright yellow snake eyes and patches of their human like flesh are scaly. They have no hair on their body and snake like tongues .

Environment: live in jungle like villages that are always near water.
Religion: they worship a six armed serpent goddess who wields magic weapons in each arm who vanished ages ago with promises of returning.
Additional info: the leaders of the shivan each hold one of the six weapons of the goddess. The shivans are said to be able to paralyze and even hypnotize those who stare deep into their eyes.

Interesting, so the different blood make them different from another group? Appearance or abilities?

without proper context, it's kind of hard for me to brainstorm something really interesting. I kind of need to know what kind of environment I'm working with here.

Here's a quick one
Name of people: The nation of Luces Mundas
Physical appearances: Resembles most ethnic humans who have created a culture in desert areas. Luces Mundas can sometimes seem like a cross between Caucasian features mixed in with Arab traits.
Environment they live in: In the desert area of The Probatius, huddling around various oasis and connecting rivers.
Religion: It's namesake, the Luces Mundas, "Light of the World"
Additional info:
The people of Luces Mundas are a proud, stubborn, and incredibly resilient people. Their early ancestry was drawn mostly from various tribes driven from their more fertile lands onto the desert. Unfortunately, various tribes traditions did not survive assimilation, as much of their ways were lost during the unification wars. The harsh environment plus relentless predators that dwell within the sands have made the people of the Luces Mundas incredibly fatalistic and they often see life less as a thing to be celebrated and more of a test of rights for the afterlife. To the Luces Mundas, the afterlife offer it's rewards to those who face tribulation and does not cower. This has produced an incredibly hardy people.
Within the Luces Mundas religion, one of the most important elements is the ying-yang like symbolism of water and fire. It is believed that the prophet of the Luces Mundas was able to create water from flowing sand, and turn barren soil into teeming oases. Conversely, he also smites his enemies through the use of the cleansing flame. And often, relationships can be described using terms that describe temperature and water. To share a cup of water with another is a display of great trust and friendship.

I usually strongly dislike demihuman races, especially if they are animal-like. In some cases I can put up with elves since they tend to basically just be extra pretentious humans. I can almost always put up with any "race" that used to basically be humans, and was transformed as the result of a magical or scientific mishap that is a significant part of the story. That feels a lot more meaningful to me, instead of just "oh yeah by the way this world has catgirls and lizardmen."

That said, my game Vindication does have one non-human race. As follows.

Name of people: Demons
Physical appearances: Look identical to humans, but vastly stronger, and able to use dark magic.
Environment they live in: Formerly lived alongside humans, long ago. Eventually, becoming greedy, the demons attempted to enslave and ultimately slaughter humanity so that they could have a home of their own and not be subservient to the human government. God banished the demons into hell. But in His mercy, every thousand years, He allows them to briefly return, to give them a chance to repent and atone for their sins. So far this has happened twice. The first time, they tried to take over the world again, and actually succeeded in doing so without anyone realizing they were demons, but a group of heroes appeared and defeated them. The second time is the main plot of the game, so now they are here alongside humans again.
Religion: God appeared before them and personally banished them to hell. What do you THINK their religious beliefs are?
Additional info: There are only four of them. One of those is not a true demon, but rather a half-demon; her father was one of the other three demons, and her mother was one of the heroes who defeated the demons the last time around. The half-demon struggled to aid those legendary heroes, but fell prey to her dark side in the end and was banished as well. Now all four have returned again. The half-demon is the only one of them who makes an attempt at atonement in this game.

Name of people: Albino Parakeets

Physical appearances: The average Albino Parakeet is roughly seven feet tall, sporting a large amount of flooding, tough snow-white feathers. They resemble parakeets in most aspects besides their frightening height.

Environment they live in: They live throughout the world, in woodland areas, pwning all the noobs possible, feeding on various nuts, insects, and fruits.

Religion: They do not believe in religion as they find it foolish.

Additional info: They are relatively peaceful beings that will only get violent if threatened. They hold a vast kingdom somewhere in the Black Forest of Germany, where they flourish.

Necroposting because I wanted to share an idea without opening up a repetitive, uncompiled thread:

Name of people: Phantasians
Physical appearances: Humans who, due to deeply condensed magical energies, have much more colorful hair and eye colors.
Environment they live in: They live amongst humans, being of the same descendants.
Religion: Anything other humans would worship.
Additional info: A near-constant use of magic has removed the numerous colors Humans once had, condensing them down to greens, browns, blacks, blues and blondes. Phantasians maintained a more physical nature, not striving to use magic endlessly, and continued to have children with very colorful features like violet hair and blood red eyes.
They have a lot more difficulty grasping magical concepts, however those that can be taught have far more potency than their watered-down counterparts. They learn magic at a very very slow pace.

@Titanhex: Wow, Titan I like the sounds of those people. It's a nice twist on the usual magic culture where the people with all the energy are always the wisest and most powerful. With so many games the culture that understand magic the most is always really flawlessly boring so I really like this idea.

My race is a little similar:
Name of People: The Chrysalis (atleast that's what they go by in the present day.)
Environment: Ashlands in the past/wherever normal humans are in the present.
Religion:don't have one of relevance.
Additional Info:A culture of humans that used to inhabit the dangerous Ashlands where nothing grows and Spirit Energy runs rampant; in the past they would test their children and the strongest would be dipped into pools of pure Spirit Energy. If they survived they would return infused with an incredible understanding of Spirit and magic which gives their eyes a goldish tint.
Nowadays, after their were brought to extinction, they claim bodies of the humans' recently dead. For 1 year the host maintains their personality after which they are overtaken by this possession. Anyone in any stage of this process is called a Chrysalis.

I don't think my game has a lot of fantasy races people would consider unique, but my game has a quasi-modern setting (modern in terms of culture, steampunk-ish in terms of technology, if that makes sense) and is very lighthearted and silly in tone, so I put a sort of spin on them. For example...

Name of people: Dwarves
Appearance: Almost like typical fantasy/fairy tale Dwarves, they're short, ugly, hairy, have thick beards and are usually dressed in business casual.
Environment they live in: Classically, deep underground, not because they liked it per say, but because rent was really, really cheap. These days, however, they spend more time in office high-rises.
Religion: Technically, Dwarves are religion; they're a kind of Faerie (minor demigods in my game's mythology), and the first Dwarves took part in the creation of If ("If" being the name of the game world). Not that anybody worships them these days, most humans worship a (fictional) thirty foot tall bipedal tortoise named Gomez. Dwarves themselves worship nothing but the almighty GP.
Additional info: There are about three thousand dwarves on the world of If at any given time, as if this were some kind of quota (it is). All Dwarves are male, and it is unknown how, or even if, they reproduce. They do not speak of it to outsiders, and most scholars have dismissed the subject of Dwarven reproduction for serious research as "too horrible to even think about".
Dwarves are best known for what they refer to as the "rowdy fratboy" period of their history, during which they spent a lot of time wearing silly horned helmets, affecting terrible brogue accents, getting plastered and pursuing get-rich-quick schemes that usually involved mining random mountains, selling magical trinkets on the cheap, or slaying things. Dwarves have grown out of that for the most part, and they have learned that rather than mining, and blacksmithing and slaying for their own gold, it was far more economical to hire people to do that for them and reap the profits. These days, the only raiding Dwarves do is corporate raiding.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to find a Dwarf that does not hold a high position in a major corporation. They're still short hairy men who like their liquor, but they're now short hairy men with important, corporate jobs that require them to wear nice suits, except on casual Fridays, when they're more prone to very loud and tasteless floral print shirts.

Name: The Alucinor
Appearance: Extremely tall and thin, usually over eight feet and under a hundred twenty-one pounds. Disproportioned arms and legs, leading a small torso and an extremely gangly appearance. Typically, all Alucinor are bald and the few with hair only have sparse coverings on their head in extremely pale colours, usually white, blue, green or purple. Eyes tend to match hair colour, so its posited those without hair would have similar colouring as their eyes.
Environment: The Alucinor seem unusually well suited for any climate. They never seem to express any discomfort with the environment around them temperature wise, and seem to do fine with any range of humidity. They seem to be everywhere that humans have explored and tend to enjoy living amongst human populations. As of yet, no purely Alucinor dwellings have been located.
Religion: The Alucinor worships creatures they call the Walkers. When asked by humans about the specifics of these Walkers, the Alucinor merely reply with extremely vague answers about the nature of the Walkers. Several scholars and researchers posit that Walkers are an ascended state of being for the Alucinor, though others argue that they're just another interpretation of the human pantheon.
Other Info: The Alucinor do differentiate between male and female, but some confusion in communication between human and Alucinor has muddled the idea - on different occasions, Alucinor have referred to the same individual by both masculine and feminine pronouns, leading some to posit that the Alucinor are capable of changing their sex. That said, no Alucinor young has ever been seen and in fact no pregnant Alucinor have ever been seen. In truth, most examinations of Alucinor lead to the conclusion that the entire race is sterile but yet it seems that the species never seems to die out. Common belief is that the Alucinor hold no influence over magick in any form - examinations by a number of top magae have revealed them not to have even a small fraction of the spark necessary to draw arcane energies.

Something like that?

This is a race i created for an RPG (post by post) but it became (or was) rather inactive, i have the link to the original post (if anyone is interested)

Name of people: Heran (or Her'ahn)
Physical appearances: Their growth rate are somehow what in the middle oh humans and elf's growth rate, in the most extreme cases an adult can be as small as the smallest human adult or as tall as the tallest adult elf but usually they tend to be somewhere in the middle.

Their hair is usually large and very, very thick. Most of the time the color of the hair is dependent on the color of the eyes as most of the time they have the same color and if not then at least the hair have a not so very different shade of whatever their eye color is, the eyes themselves have slit pupils. Then there are the ears, they are small like a humans but pointy like the elf's. Their skin is resistant against extreme weathers, mostly heat and cold, besides that it is thicker than humans so to prove it (the resistance against extreme weather), although it doesn't show... much.

Their eye color has little variation, most common colors are brown (any shade) and black. There are rare cases where some Heran's are born with a shade of grey or blue eye color, then there is always the very rare eye color which vary between all the colors of the rainbow but none has yet to see a pink eye color. There is also the 1% chance of getting different hair color then eye color and not only different shade, this is however extremely rare.

Their Nails are very durable, they don't break easily like humans... They are slightly pointy and sharp. They have a furry tail, much like that of a canine, the fur on the tail is just like their hair - it is thick.on the subject of canine, they have canines... two sharp fangs... think vampire teeth...

25% of the Heran's are born whit either fur which cover the whole body or wings (usually whit the ability to make them shrink and grow so not to be burdened by extra weight or perhaps the burden of being watched all the time), 5% of the Heran's are born whit both. In some rare instances it has happened that they have been born whit two tails.

Environment: Desert

Religion: they are strongly connected to nature, and then there are the tattooists to, well that is as close to religion they will get (more on the tattooist further down the post)

Additional info:

Tattooing: To outsiders it would seem as though there is no organization to their tattooing, even though they only use tattoo's as a military thing. For example they earn a tattoo for becoming a soldier but they all get a different tattoo because of who they are, it is a spiritual thing, the tattooer says that the tattoo was already there and that he is only bringing it forth so that the new soldier and others may be able to see and admire it.

Dress code: Their taste of clothes are different than most other as their taste says somethings in the lines of this: efficiency before comparability, comparability before looks. there are however some who clothe themselves by breaking this common sense since it isn't an actual law.

Special abilities and distinguishing features:
Physical abilities - they are born whit sharp teeth and nails, a thick skin and sometimes wings, the first years they learn not to harm them selves through trial and error and their remaining years they learn how to use it in daily life of course someone living in a tribe will learn things rather fast as they are whit their kin, whit people who can help them.
Survival, strategy & tactics - it is a tribe which practices survival, hunting, tracking and military training as a standard, it is almost law on it
Communication - they can communicate whit canines (while not actually speaking certain sounds and movements represents a specific word in the human language, well if you where to translate it anyhow)

Life cycle:
What's the average lifespan? 150:ish
When do they mature? quick answer is when they are 17
After their birth it takes them about five years to learn better control (ie: they will not harm themselves by accident, think fire when you where young you probably touched and learn not to do it again, right, so that is a principle similar to the Heran's five first years)
After their first five years they learn how to use their body (sharp nails, canine fangs etc) in the daily life for and they will also learn or be tutored by family in survival, hunting and tracking for seven years.
The following five years will mark them as an adult, they will learn on their own, techniques beyond what they have already learned; be it in the everyday life, hunt or something else. At the age of 17 they will be mature but if they haven't done what is expected by them they will not be looked upon as an adult as they will not receive their first tattoo marking their joining in the army and will therefor not find someone willing to mate whit them, well at least within the Heran's tribes anyway unless of course they find someone who would be willing to settle whit anyone.
At 17 they earn their first tattoo for becoming an adult, and by doing that joining their military, joining the military enables the new adult to truly master their skills and that training takes about another four years (some Heran's feels that since they doesn't have outside knowledge they are limited).

They mate for life so it is important that they find someone that will impress them, tattoos and personality is what they usually go after to become impressed although there may be a balance between the two there are some cases where tattoos are worth more than personality and the other way around. No they do not have marriages, those who mate will move in together

Cultural description: It is like an army, anyone viewed as an adult will be starting military training to master ones physical abilities, survival, strategy & tactics, in await for the next battle they do nothing but training, hunting and enjoying everyday life. They are a defensive tribe which does not engage military combat unless forced (sort of if i hit you you will hit me back, in this example you would have been the Heran's).

One leader and one shaman lives in every tribe and when the leaders and shamans from each tribe are gathered they will discuss war, well incoming war or suspicion of war, they leaders are the ones who lead all the soldiers into battle and the shamans will stay in their respective tribes to protect the old and young and hopefully they will recognize potential soldiers

Technology level: they use what mother earth have given them which leaves a low level of technology and there is no need for weapons as they uses their body although some tribes have started to craft, craft item for hunt but still no weapons, they make hardened leather whit sharp metal pointing outward to make their soldier more deadly.

Medicines? herbs, blood, poison they once again uses what mother earth has given them

Religion: ----
Additional Info: There are only 6 Tyranii Left, each from different parts of the realm, Tyrant is my character which is why i have made this race (Tyranii) he is called Ty in my Story, his heritage goes back to the ancient dragons( the very first tyrants of the realm) His mothers ancestors wage back to The ancient Demonic Water Dragon, And his father's ancestors were Humanoid Wolfs( not Like twilight just like werewolfs but yet they are different,(Cant have it the same figured it would be lame and i want to think out side the box)).

Necro-to the-post? I guess this thread can be a little stimulating, though.

Since I don't have many races in my current RPG I'll talk about a race from my action game Tina of the Stars.

Name of people: Fairy

Physical appearances: They are insect-humanoid hybrids, possessing many of the physical characteristics of human beings, only they are shorter in height (most not going over two feet tall), have no visible nostrils (though they sense their surroundings with their antennae), and having a pair of insect-like wings and antennae sticking out of their skulls.

Environment they live in: The home planet of all fairies is Pix, located somewhere within the Fayefi Galaxy. This planet contains a variety of environements, to lush green fields to dry deserts, even some urbanized districts. As fairies prefer to live in harmony with their natural surroundings instead of creating expansive cities, most of the planet seems underdeveloped in terms of industrialization, though the fairies themselves are capable of creating advanced technology.

Religion: Religion tends to vary throughout the planet. There is a sect who honors a deity who is believed to be "the mother of all fairies" and that this deity's death somehow created fairies within the galaxy. No one can verify whether this is true, however, and not even the fairies themselves are sure that this is the case. Other fairies prefer to honor the natural world around them, or simply live by no religion.

Additional info: Fairies are born with an element, and their magic abilities and sometimes appearance reflect that element. These are Earth, Electric, Fire, Water, Charm, and Star. The Star type of fairy is the rarest of all, and it is rumored that a fairy with the Star attribute is destined to be a savior to fairy kind (Tina is a Star-type fairy). Fairies are able to use magic that reflects their element, though as this requires vigorous training it's actually uncommon to see fairies use it.
As evident by their wings, fairies are capable of flying.

@TyranT: I think it's a pretty interesting take on existing creatures like dragons and whatnot being "Tyranii". I'm fine with it.

Soul Eaters sound interesting, they could provide for quite a scare when encountering them in a fight.

I guess I'll share this, I was gonna use this for an upcoming comic I'm writing.

Name of people: Abso
Physical appearances: Similar to humans, but their skin has a bit of a gray tone. They are much shorter than humans and never grow past 5 feet. They also have glowing eyes, needed for their environment.
Environment they live in: Absos live on a planet similar to earth, but under completely different circumstances. Their planed is inhabited by dinosaur like predators, and so the Absos have to hide most of the day. Their eyes glow so they can hunt for food at night. Because of this they are exceptionally clever and stealthy.
Religion: They never had one
Additional info: Absos can breed with humans to create a half-Abso. Half-Absos have less pale of skin and only have glowing irises. They are still smaller than humans, but are taller than full Absos.

Name of people: Vampire Clan
Physical appearances: White/silver hair, red or orange eyes (other eye colors are way rarer) and horns.
Environment they live in: Dry indoor enviorments, however they can stand on a sunlight thanks to their collars.

Additional info:
They have their own writing language called Vampurus which they use to guard their secrets. They also run their own cult of candidates who hope one day to become vampires.

Now why anybody would want to become a vampire? One of the reasons lies within their power of Dark Arts. It is amongst one of the most powerful schools of magic in their universe and mostly vampires can take advantage of it. However the demons hold even more powerful magic than them.

Personality wise, they are very self-centered and believe to be above of other races expect the demons, which some of them actively worship. After all it was demons influence that gave them more power. While they can comfortably walk on the sunlight, they fear water and think it makes them weaker despite of their immortality.

Name of people: they're still considered humans, but are commonly referred to as Seers.
Physical appearances: human with the addition of a third eye in the center of their forehead
Environment they live in: anywhere humans do
Religion: not inherent
Additional info: The third eye is little more than vestigial, though their vision is much sharper than average person including low light vision. These people are telepathic and are naturally gifted with magic. They also tend to have empathetic and passive personalities. They also exhibit greater resistance to toxins.
