Story
This entry within the Dragon Fantasy series takes us into the magical world of Tsufana--a place where wizards and dragons reign supreme. These lands, however, face a grave crisis: Vlad, a famed Wizard hailing from the prosperous lands of Lispen, has defected, and now wields his magics with a dark purpose. In his quest for an unfathomable dark power, he has cursed the world and its inhabitants, transforming them into monsters and various other forms of demonic entities.

You take control of two siblings from the town of Ziazu. Mysteriously surviving their hometown's collapse under Vlad's curse, they set out with help from a brave knight and a well-renowned sage to end the evil wizard's vile curse and restore peace to the land.

Characters
Falcon
"The hero of the tale. He and his sister were the only survivors when Vlad's curse overcame their hometown."

Ludia

Torkus
"A great Sage hailing from the town of Borez. He wields potent healing magics, and knows much about the world and its inhabitants."

Armak
"Great warrior born and raised within the fishing village of Orul. His physical power is amazing, but he lacks the know-how to cast magic."

Well, I'm glad to announce that progress on this has increased quite a bit! And so the game is being developed at a much faster rate than it had been in the past. My reason? The project I was directing MOST of my attention on has been placed on hiatus until I get some motivation back to work on it. My main mapper had to leave the team, so that left me pretty bummed. Nothing that could be helped, of course, but it shot my motivation. Anyway, because of that I can now focus all my attention on this project instead! HURRAH! Isn't that exciting? I bet it is. You KNOW you're pumped.

Also, here are some more screenshots for your viewing pleasure!

Exploring the world for hidden treasures. They're everywhere. Literally. There's going to be so much to do and find, and a TON of exploration to be done. I want to make it a real adventure, so the world will have much more to offer other than the main quest.

Stumbling across a hidden village tucked away in the mountains.

It was pointed out to me already that Serpent was spelled wrong. For some reason the proper spelling of that always eludes me! Gah. Anyway, this is the only shop in the game that sells relics/accessories that resist status ailments, etc.

GREAT AND HELPFUL NPCS. Where would we be without them?

Full-party battle against a group of wild monsters out in the desert! Phew. They'll certainly need a drink or two after this skirmish.

Tiny little village. Though then again, almost all of the villages and towns in this games are small. This is due to the walking speed. Also, I based the town and dungeon sizes off of those found in Dragon Warrior II.

I also leave you with a preview video I made quite a while back. It still holds up nicely, but lacks a few new things that the current version has (like naming your characters, etc.)
Regardless it conveys the feels quite nicely.

Enjoy!

This does look really good, I can see a lot of work went into it. I also like the fusion of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, but with your own spin on it. I'll be downloading this as well.

edit: I attempted to play this, but because it doesn't include 2k3 rtp and I do not have 2k3 so I can't play it unless it includes rtp sad.gif

Thank you for the downloads! And yeah, I decided not to include the RTP for the demo, but don't worry! The complete game will DEFINITELY feature it, as I want as many people as possible to experience the completed version. Besides, you'll get a good understanding of what was in the demo from the preview video, so watch that instead! I appreciate the attempt though.

I say stick with the retro effect. I'm sure it sucks that you've lost motivation on your remake, but I wonder if it was all because of the mapper, or because you might be more comfortable with retro graphics? Very few can pull off a decent game with NES qualities, and I tend to cling more to playing those kind of games whenever I can.

I have to admit that I DO enjoy working on these "retro" projects FAR more than any of the others. They just have this certain feeling about them that keeps me wanting to come back for more, regardless of whether that means WORKING on the game or test-playing it. I just have so much more motivation and interest when I'm working with these graphics. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy working on a rare SNES-inspired project as well, but as you say, I`m probably going to stick to these types of games in the future. That, and it's what I'm mainly known for in the RPG-making community. =P

Also, in regards to Heroes of Tsufana, I've roughly complete around 80% of the game. Hopefully I can get this out before the year is over! With any luck, that is.

"Good news, everyone!"

The main game has been completed, and the project has been sent off to testers! Once they've finished their job and report back to me with their findings, I'll fix and touch-up whatever needs to be looked at, and then add in the final optional content. After that? PUBLIC RELEASE! WOOOOOO!!! Aren't you all so excited?! Because I know I sure am! =P

Updated with a link to a video play-through/demonstration that I've recently started and uploaded to Youtube. Sadly I can't embed the video for quick access, as that would be more visually appealing than just a link. But oh well! Just letting you know. So if you're curious as to how the game functions, feels, and just LOOKS in-motion, then wait no longer! The link's at the bottom of the main post.

This game looks pretty dang sweet. The colors kind of hurt my eyes, but that's Dragon Quest style for ya. xD

"Arandomgamemaker" of RMN was kind enough to dedicate some of time towards writing a review for Heroes of Tsufana, and he gave it a whopping 4-out-of-5 stars! Awesome. Here's the link:

Heroes of Tsufana REVIEW

However I will also post it here for convenience's sake.

QUOTE
Heroes of Tsufana is a game created by Ephiam. (You probably already know that tongue.gif)
It attempts to emulate the oldschool Dragon Warrior games, and I must say it does a pretty darn good job about it.

Story: 3/5
You and you sister's town was destroyed by Vlad. The whole point of the game is to, well, defeat Vlad and bring peace back to the world.

Now, I don't really have much of a problem with these kinds of plots, but I do feel it could have been a bit more original. Still, it keeps you playing.

Graphics:5/5
They are NES Dragon Quest sprites. How could you possibly go wrong with that?

Mapping: 4/5
The way Ephiam made the mapping was to mimic the minimalistic style of Dragon Quest 1. Bearing that in mind, I think it is pretty accurate. None of the maps look ugly at all! I think the minimalist style actually compliments with this game very well.

Music:5/5
The music is also taken from Dragon Quests 1-4, which in my opinion automatically makes it awesome. However, this is the first time I've heard the soundtrack in MP3 format. That may not sound like a big deal, but MP3 format allows it to sound exactly like the original version.

Gameplay: 4/5
The battles are the traditional 2K3 ATB system. Depending on the game, this is either a good thing, or a bad thing. In this game, I think it is a good thing. The battles aren't long, boring, or slow, and they always seem enjoyable to me. I do wish that you could target multiple enemies at a time, though. It's not that big of an issue, but it does get annoying with large groups of enemies.

Gameplay outside of battle follow a pretty basic formula for the first two towns - get to town, go to dungeon, get treasure, fight boss, get out. However, as soon as you get the ship, the game opens up tremendously. In fact, it's very hard to figure out where to go next! It can be irritating, but I do like the freedom you have. Not to mention, all he treasure chests everywhere.

Replayability: 3/5
While there is a lot of stuff to do, I feel that there doesn't seem to be much of a point in replaying this game that much. Although, it does stay fun!

Pros:
-Fun, engaging battles.
-Awesome graphics and music
-Plenty to do.

Cons:
-It is a bit hard to figure out where to go.
-The story could be a bit better, but it's not that big of an issue.

Overall: 4/5

I played this game awhile back and I really enjoyed it. You have a very interesting storyline and I like it that you're using classic graphics. Not very many games I played do that. Keep up the great work. (:

Thanks muchly, dude!

To quote what I said over at RMN:
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I made a BIG BOO-BOO! When you go to Burg (town in the desert) for the first time you're immediately transported to the un-cursed version of the town that you're only supposed to have access to once you defeat the Dark Priest.

Also another more INTERESTING error on my part is that if you go into Lispen in this version of the game you can fight OMEGA without any extra work on your part. Just enter the town, go to the church, and step into the empty space to the right of the Priest. Voila! Touch-encounter with OMEGA. I had it there for testing purposes and forgot to delete the event. "

Oh, and also be on the look-out for the "Hard-Type/Mode" version of the game that will be released sometime in the future! It will include a variety of bug fixes, a few touch-ups to weapons and the like, as well as additions such as a higher difficulty level (DUH), and Summons (which are basically group-targeting spells) for the Hero's sister!

Small Update!

"While the "Hard" version is still in the works, I've decided to upload a new and slightly updates version of the game for future players and those of you who MIGHT want to give it a re-download (if you've not made it very far yet and plan to, etc.)

-Made random encounter rate on the world map slightly higher.

-Fixed the event involving the town of Burg. Now you'll have to defeat the Dark Priest before having access to the un-cursed version of the town instead of being transported there regardless of having defeated the Dark Priest or not.

-OMEGA is no longer able to be fought in Lispen.

-Some music changes to take out tracks I didn't think fit.

-There was a bug where if a player left the Sunken Lispen Castle for last in their quest to obtain the Four Relics and got all of the others BEFORE going there, they wouldn't be able to obtain the Beads of Crossing from the Elder in Borez. The event would be skipped and the castle would become inaccessible ."
