Between 7 and 8 there's not really a big difference accept you half to click on the desktop metro icon to open it, the huge difference is speed and performance. As I've said 1 Gig to 400 megabytes is worth the upgrade minus the 1-2 second delay clicking on the desktop icon.
I should probably mention that there was a huge overhaul in the kernel as well as security, I've noticed that Windows 8 is actually far more stable than Windows 7.
The Metro UI is nice once you get used to it, but just install start8, install the quick launch toolbar (quick launch > pinned apps any day)
Overall Windows 8 is an upgrade in the sense that it does have and updated and more secure kernel/security than windows 7 but hating on it for just metro which can be turned off is honestly stupidity.

I haven't used to metro UI since I got it. Went to it's desktop-ish mode and haven't touched the UI or charms bar since then. Overall, I like Windows 8 just as much as 7. Boots up in about 10 seconds and is pretty fast overall. My only complaint(which likely has more to do with the PC's manufacturer, but a least some of it is Microsoft's doing) is how much useless crap came preinstalled. Metro UI was loaded with icons for Amazon, Ebay, random photo share, weather etc etc etc apps, which I promptly removed.
It also came preinstalled with Norton, which I immediately removed. Also McAfee, which is like an overly obsessive girlfriend. "Oh! A removable drive! Do you want me to scan it for you? I can scan it for you. Just tell me. Want me to scan it? I'll do it anyways, but I just wanted to ask.". So yeah, that was removed as well. Don't need two different AV/protection programs constantly badgering me about subscribing.
