This is actually the second time I'm introducing this game. Last time when I tried to, life was too hectic and I didn't have the time I needed to to work on it and be able to post regular updates. Things have settled down so here it is!

The Last Earth Project

Abstract:

At the end of the 21st century humanity awaits the end of their days on Earth. Centuries of polluting the planet have kick started a number of inevitable environmental processes that will soon render Earth uninhabitable.
Genre:

Science Fiction
Engine:

RMXP, but would like to port to PSX or other more portable medium.
Story

In the last decade of the 21st century, civilization has thrown reason out the window and has looked to God for comfort in their final days. Watching over what is left of humanity from the cataclysmic natural disasters that have already transpired is the religious faction Nutrum Ubuscus Nol, or NUN. There are those however that continue to hope. The organization, Lozo, was established to continue the work of a giant space ship about the size of 3 cubic New York Cities, Last Earth. The Last Earth Project was previously abandoned when NUN occupied the majority of Earth's remaining land masses and forced the UN to be disbanded and ordered the ship be destroyed, claiming that Last Earth would allow the sinners of the world to escape heavenly rapture. To implement their control over civilization, NUN forced its occupied nations to form larger federated super states, constituting the United Federations. Russia however remains unconquered, and harbors Lozo and the effort to complete Last Earth. Now Lozo must finish the ship, bring as many of Earth's creatures on board and launch off of Earth under the nose of NUN/The United Federations and before the planet's time runs out.

Setting

The events of Earth's final days are viewed from the perspectives of the protagonists, attempting to assist in the completion of Last Earth and facilitate the salvation of their civilization. This task takes them across the globe in search of parts for Last Earth, allies and the spreading of their cause in rallying support for their struggle against NUN/The United Federations.

Characters

This is a set of the characters I have figured out so far, and what I have figured out for them. It is, like everything else, a work in progress.

Name: Grey Weber
Age: 25
Height: 6'01”
Ethnicity: Some caucasian, exact nationality not known.
Hair: Grey
Eyes: Blue

Grey is the lead protagonist of the game. Grey remembers little about his life before the age of 20. His furthest memory at the start of the game was being found by Jej Weber of Lozo, beaten and starving on the streets of Mega City. He was taken in by Jej and has been a Last Earth Supply Runner and liaison to other Lozo cells since. Grey is a chaotic-good personality, his character is largely depicted with irritation, frustration and impatience. He is known for having little remorse for those he has killed while on the job, so long as they are on the other side of the war. He certainly will not hesitate to do so in an instant of the good of Last Earth is at stake. Despite his dedication to Lozo and the cause, he is kind hearted when you dig deeper, but you have to dig pretty far to find it. It is later revealed that he does indeed have much regret for the lives he has taken, but compartmentalizes it well and only thinks about it during downtime, when nothing else is occupying his thoughts. Grey was biologically modified after joining Lozo when they discovered his immune system was strong enough to handle the Super Cells. This modification made it possible for him to use Vespr, along with a number of other perks. His favored weapon style is firearms. He does know that he has had grey hair all his life, hence his name.

Name: Lucy Sergei
Age: 26
Height: 5'10”
Ethnicity: White/Russian
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Green

Lucy is the daughter of Russian prime minister Nova Sergei. Against her mother's wishes, Lucy joined Lozo as soon as she was of age. Like Grey, Lucy is strong enough to handle the Super Soldier modifications done by Lozo. She had it done when she joined at 18, along with a tattoo of the Lozo feather logo on her lower back. Soon after, Lucy decided to go to Japan to study martial arts before beginning her work with Lozo. There, she got extensive Karate training and excelled in the art of Kendo. As a result, her favored weapon style is swords. Lucy's personality is very gung-ho, always wearing her heart on her sleeve. She believes fervently in Last Earth and has both feet planted firmly on the ground. She is an excellent influence on the sometimes emotionally unstable Grey. Like the rest of her family, Lucy is the definition of “having herself figured out,” is always truthful to herself and is a strong self-advocate. Ironically, she tends to turn down prospective mates with similar personalities. She is however a very judgemental, and will make it very obvious to anyone around her of what she thinks of them. She has little respect for the physically weak, the fearful and the reclusive.

Name: Raven McKnight
Age: 26
Height: 6'04”
Ethnicity: White/Brittish
Hair: Red
Eyes: Blue

Raven is a NUN spy working inside the same Lozo cell as Grey, in Zone 1 of Mega City. He first approaches Grey and Lucy as a friend, and then later reveals his true colors at a vulnerable moment. He is quite brash and lecherous, and quite the ass hole. His favored weapon is also swords.

Name: Cici Lombardi
Age: 23
Height: 5'08”
Ethnicity: Not really known, has furry cat ears (mutation)
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown

Cici is an inhabitant of the Ukrainian village of Klov. Her parents were both Mobile Armor engineers from Mega City that decided they no longer wanted to work for NUN. They escaped to Klov and had Cici. Cici is very perky and kind hearted, she gets quite upset when Grey and Lucy seem to lean towards not taking her with them when they go through the Ukrainian Mountains. They take her along in the end. Cici is an accomplished martial artist and prefers claws as weapons.

Name: Father Michael Gepton
Age: 49
Height: 6'07”
Ethnicity: White/Mix of a number of different Europeaon nationalities
Hair: Iron Grey
Eyes: An icy blue

Father Gepton is the lead Apostle of NUN, the leader of the United Federations and thereby the premier of most of what's left of the civilized world. He is at first the one ultimately behind the effort to destroy Last Earth. Gepton is a smooth talking, charismatic, extremely tall man from the Southern part of North America. When he is not ruling, Gepton spends most of his time doing body conditioning, a few hours of tai-chi, a few hours of tae-kwon-do and much time on his personal mobile armor fighting course. As a result, he is quite lethal in any kind of combat, including from within a mobile armor. His ideology is that a lot of leaders become physically soft because they don't need to stay in shape, but he argues that being the “leader of the civilized world” requires that he be strong in both mind and body. Gepton will also personally lead certain assault missions, ones that he finds are interesting, much to the distress of his inferiors as they worry something will happen to him. Gepton is a compassionate man and a true believer of the faith. He believes that even members of Lozo are his children and just need help in being guided home to the light of God. He calls his United Federation his “family,” and grieves whenever there is an uprising in one of the super states. Much of the time, he goes in person with his mobile armor and rides at the front of his forces to put down revolts.

Name: Father Niel Hueber
Age: 37
Height: 5'07”
Ethnicity: Mostly Germanic
Hair: None
Eyes: Brown

Father Hueber is one of the Apostles of Nun and thereby is at the top of the command hierarchy of the United Federations. Hueber is egotistical and quite insane. Having grown up physically inferior, with a number of ailments from birth including cerebral palsy, a weak immune system, low blood pressure and fairly severe bone density issues, he was unable to live the same life that many of his peers did. As a result he was looked down upon and disrespected, mostly by himself. Years and years of this drove him off the edge of sanity. Quite the opposite to Gepton, Hueber's main interest is watching suffering, as it feeds his inner demons. His one redeeming attribute is his finesse with machines, systems programming, and various sciences. Having had no friends and no life growing up, Hueber spent all of his time studying these disciplines. Although quite crazy, Hueber is very shrewd. He answers only to Father Gepton.

Credits

I will first say that all custom scripting has been done by me. Aside from the default scripting logic by Enterbrain, there is no 3rd party code in Last Earth.

Most of what I have so far in terms of graphics comes from the RMXP game Knight Blade, with these exceptions:

Battlers are mostly done by Dollmage

There are some absolutely beautifal isometric ish maps that I found on a website. Unfortunately I don't know who the artist is, but they are not done by me. I can't draw worth scratch.

The music is from Knight Blade and the RM2k3 game Kindred Saga.

Features
As you'll see, Last Earth involves a custom menu largely inspired by FF7. The battle screen is also loosely inspired by it as well but for that I focused more on the combo system. Each character has a pool of skills they can learn throughout the game and they can have 3 different combos configured with those skills at a time. In battle, right now, each skill is kicked off against the target when the right input key is hit at the right time. As of this writing, this is very easy to do so it's very much a work in progress. This game also implements a system very similar to FF7 materia. It's called Vespr. In Last Earth though Vespr itself does not improve, rather your characters learn the spells from the Vespr they wear as they increase their “int” stat. That dove-tails into stats, each character has the default 4 provided by RMXP, strength dexterity, agility and intelligence. The implementations of these stats are quite different, however. Each level a character gets 5 points to put into one of those stats. The max any one of those stats can be is 255. In order for a character to equip weapons, armor or learn skills they need a certain stat proficiency. For example for Grey to equip the SMG weapon, he needs 30 str, 25 dex, 20 agi and 10 int.

My goal is to slowly change the quality of the maps from standard RMXP (fairly rectangular) to that of what you see in the map screen shot. In order to do that though I will need more graphics like the one shown. Feel encouraged to let me know if you know of a good artist that can do this!

The other major issue is battlers. There are virtually no sprite sheets out there for futuristic enemies, guys with guns/robots and the like suitable for 640x480 resolution. I noticed that the RMXP game Crisis Meteor has quite a few of these, (very nicely done) and is the only place I've seen them. Again, if anyone knows anyone who can draw this sort of thing I would love to hear from you!

Thank you for reading and stay tuned!

If you need sci-fi sprites, I suggest you pay Deviantart a visit.

There's a section for isometric character art. Some of the artists, take commissions and others have tutorials or bases that you can use to create the characters yourself.

Looks neat, thanks! I have adapted some RM2k3 battler sprites as character sprites. Trying to replace as many of the stoic, 4 directional RM-style sprites as possible for characters. I've also implemented an FF7 style mapping technique where your character grows/shrinks depending on how "close" they are to the player in 3d-esque maps.

New save paradigm! I've modified the MVC logic of the scene file object to allow up to 16 game saves accessible through a set of scrolling windows. Of course with RGSS you can allow as many game saves as you want depending on the capacity of the persistent storage device backing them (player's HD or SSD)
