I recently entered the RRR Art competition and got last place for my fail entry. <3

Some stuff I have to say.

Regardless, I think I've improved very much the moment I hit fifteen (about 1 day ago biggrin.gif). I used to be horrible at basic figures and stuff and was only good at landscapes and other works of art. About two years ago, I decided I want to get serious about drawing manga but mix it with realism. I got some pretty good results so far. My landscapes and abstract pictures are mostly in my sketch books, but I've scanned some to my DeviantART. As stated, even though my style is drawing manga/anime, I want to evolve it and soon be able to draw manga, realism, and cartoon.


These are several sketches over the past few years. They're on notebook paper because I find that the lines help me a lot at this stage.

The Rain doodle images look good. I think that the eyes on #2 are very well done. =D

The S4 League fanart is pretty good, but the weapons need a bit more work. =]

Nice detail on the Arab dude's face. =]

Kaybar needs a bit more work, looks a little too thin. wink.gif

Some of these are really quite good, but what you really need to focus on are your tools and your timing.
Think about it, even the greatest builder in the world couldn't turn sand into a sky scraper in fifteen minutes.

Set out nice blank paper, pretty much any size will do, really plan what you're going to draw and make sure you have the necessary tools. Some artists use as many as six different pencils just to do eyes, and a total of over double that for the full person,
You don't have to be that obsessive, but just remember the proper tools help.
Then you have timing. A lot of these look rushed, which is bad because you can easily identify where they were rushed and where they weren't. Try spending a lot of time on your drawing, come back to it over multiple sittings.
Time can make a poor artist good, and make a good artist great.
You never know the limits of your capabilities until you've taken the time to find them,

It also wouldn't hurt to look into colouring.

To be honest, I definitely prefer your more real drawings as opposed to manga.
Gator, Abstract code blue, Shoes and Shovels
Those were my three favorites.

You have potential.. Take a little time and see what you can do.

The funny thing is these drawings were planned as such. I'm not the best manga artist in the world, yet. :3

Thanks for the advice though, recently I went and bought 3 types of pencil leads to improve my drawing. Sadly, we don't have any blank pages available here so I have to use my notebooks. Though I wouldn't say rushed, it took me somewhat of a while to do my manga, even more for the realistic. I just hope if I keep practicing I'll get better. I'd rather also start with coloring after I have the basics down.

I wouldn't say they look so much rushed as I would say drawn as a whole, which can have a rushed look. I agree with Sparrowman about more than one tool, and it makes me want to ask a favor :3 My theory is that at the MINIMUM, a person should have two tools; a pencil and a pen. When I do legit pictures and not just doodles/sketches, I draw with a pencil and 5 pens (sizes .001, .01, .03, .05 and .08)

SO, what I would LOVE for you to do, is very lightly draw a SKETCH in pencil. Don't draw the whole person at first. First start with circles and lines to get the outline of the figure. Then sketch over that to draw an undetailed naked body. Then, in darker lines, sketch over that again to add clothes and details. THEN, haul out a pen, and draw over the dark lines and stuff, the "good lines" I call them. Wait 10 minuets or so, and erase the pencil so you're just left with the pen :3 And when drawing with the pen, don't be shy with the lines and just go nuts with them. Makes them light and loose. That sounds weird, but lol Imagine the letter S and the letter R. The letter S is a lot softer and looser looking than the letter R, so think of the letter S when you draw with the pen hahahaha.

You'll see part of what I mean soon, I'm waiting for youtube to upload some videos for me XD I made a couple pages of picture tutorials for you, and the rest are videos XD

And now that the suggestions are out of the way, lemme just say LOOK AT YOU!!!!! biggrin.gif!!!! I'm SO proud of yooouuu, you said you wanted to draw manga, and you're working so hard on it!!! You've improved SO MUCH from when you first started! You've improved SO much on spacing and style, it's obvious that you're getting a better grip on proportion, this just makes me so happy to see! SO HAPPY n_n you're doing a GREAT job, keep it up, you've improved SO much and all you can do is continue to improve!

You can do very nice things even with a coal chunk if you can imagine the picture in your mind, and put it into paper. Don't give that much value to those "tools". Your best tool is your mind, then body, then practice, and lastly(and less important) talent.

SO true Leodude!!! SO true. It reminds me that I forgot to freak out at the non-anime stuff.

OMG. I absolutely adore them because of the exact reason Leodude said, your other pictures REALLY showcase your creativity and imagination, they are GORGEOUS. Even on your quest to draw humans and whatnot, totally DON'T give up that other style, it's AMAZING.

I'll make sure to use that strategy now that I have 2 mecha-pencils and a pen. (.05HB/.08B) It sounds...well sound enough and my pieces would preferably get better. As for my other art, I know it's better than my characters but sadly my Prismacolors ran out (fweaking stubs xD). They're pretty expensive so I don't see me getting another pack in the near future, mostly I'll be practicing those kind of things with my pencils now to get a better sense of shading.

Wow, you're only 15? I thought you were 23 or something. XDD

Anyway, your work is very good! And your ambition is really great for your age.
The realism in your work is really fantastic to see. :]]

One thing that you can try that might help is flipping the image horizontally though. I dunno if you've heard of this trick, but it's great for getting a hang of balance and things like that.

Im going to assume things below so I apologize if this isn't super relevant:

Are you reading up on Andrew Loomis books?! Because it really looks like it! The last picture really excites me that you are working on a little bit of realism. One thing I would suggest you take up (or practice a bit more) is your bone structure. By learning bonestructure it will help you be more consistent with the placement of features.
Its also great that you are working on your secondary planes but I would maybe work on your primary planes just a tad more?

If you are reading Andrew Loomis books take the time to read his book about perspective as it will help you with your landscapes a lot!

Thanks for the feedback, I'm not sure how I can use the flipping trick while drawing because I do it traditionally and scanning it in constantly to check is a big hassle. I do try it when I finish and it does point out flaws to me. I still haven't figured out how to take advantage of it fully though.

Indeed I am, bacon. I currently am practicing the facial bone structure and basic planes of the head for shading and playing around with age. I find that drawing old men is the most helpful way to practice or aged people in anguish or anger as they express a lot of emotion with their facial muscles and the bones become apparent under the skin due to the stretched muscles. I just tried to see for myself how it would look if I attempted to draw the diagram of all the planes myself, it did look like an aged man at first, but after tweaking it around some, I managed to get it to look like a mid-aged or young one, a form of practice you could say. But I am trying to memorize the basic ones and shade according to them.

Hopefully I can move onto perspective and figures after I'm done with heads. From there it's a trip through Hogarth, Vilppu, Mattesi and so on. With a mix of Bridgman for anatomy.

A project developed by Ambry. This used to be my old RMXP project but I converted it to GM8 and now Construct due to the game play possibilities. It's an action platformer with RPG elements and slight twists here and there. The project is based on 'The Seventh Tower' series by Garth Nix, but I assure you, I'm changing a lot of things!

Ohhhhh; well in that case then, take the picture and flip it over so the blank side of the sheet/back is facing towards you.
Then, hold up the reversed image to a lightsource and take a look at it. (' ')/

Another thing that i dunno if you do btw is to try drawing at an angle -- propping up the drawing a little from the back.

I've got my Platform Engine now. Still have to tweak it a bit to allow the 'action' part xD.
