M.U.G.E.N.
M.U.G.E.N. is a 2D game engine designed to help developers create their own fighting games (Mortal Kombat, Steet Fighter, etc.) The original M.U.G.E.N. was actually created to work well with all the major operating systems: Windows, Linux, and DOS, which makes this engine widely available to developers on all operating systems. With M.U.G.E.N.'s flexibility, it allows developers to create characters use to fight in the game. Background stages can be compiled, and various music options are allowed as background music. Various media files are supported; such as, MP3s, MIDIs, ADX, and OGGs.
Although this engine is mostly preferred for creating fighting games, M.U.G.E.N. allows its developers to stray beyond its standards to create shooter and platformer games. With all the documentation, flexibility, and usage, M.U.G.E.N. has earned its poopularity as the most preferred fighting game engine.
