Game Maker
Game Maker is a popular game creation program created by Mark Overmans. Written in Delphi and capable of creating stand-alone EXEs, Game Maker allows developers to create professional-looking games with minimal knowledge required. With that being said, Game Maker also has an extensive built-in language called GML that should keep even the most picky professional developers content. The resources are stored within the game's file so there's no need for large libraries of external files. Game Maker is the perfect instrument to create platformers, Top-Down-Shooters and 3D FPS, but is not limited to just these; you can also create rpgs, racing games, ninja fighting games, aerial combat games, and anything really. Still not satisfied? Plug in an extension/DLL, and the sky is the limit giving you access to the "Industry standard" c/c++ language.
Game Maker comes in two popular versions: Game Maker 6 and Game Maker 7. With Game Maker 7 comes Vista compatibility and a more reliable extension system, but don't fear; your old GM6 games will still work in the new Gmk format. However, Game Maker 6 has more stability. If you're not sure about whether you want to pay for Game Maker, try the free Lite edition. Lite can be used for free, but it is limited in its functionality. When you really want to push the limits and test your development skills, you can upgrade to the pro edition and create 3D games, online games or whatever your mind can think of.
Game Maker is all about flexibility, and it breaks the barriers of limitations that other makers may have.
